Why you CAN'T buy a Rolex! Experts reveal how shoppers have to 'build a relationship' by 'spending up to £100,000' with the brand to pick up the latest watches

Experts have revealed how shoppers have to 'build a relationship' with luxury watch brand Rolex by spending up to £100,000 on less desirable timepieces in order to pick up the latest models - as the brand tries to maintain exclusivity in the Instagram age.

While the uninitiated might assume that the luxurious fashion brand would happily take anyone's money, industry insiders have explained how the process of buying an expensive watch from the designer might be slightly be complicated than that.

Experts said that with demand outstripping supply, the brand has had to place limits on who can buy what watch - by deciding 'if customers are the right type of person' to wear their timepiece.

Or you and your crew can just show up with sledgehammers and help yourselves to all the Rolexes you can carry.

I like the reverse snobbery idea of shunning luxury brands and wearing quality but non-luxury items. I and my money would rather work on our "relationship" with investment accounts.

If you act fast you can still get one of the latest and best authentic Polex watches from vendors in Time’s square for really good prices. And by “in Time’s Square I mean literally in it, they’ll be out on the streets.

In the good old pre-commie days you could get a “Rollex” for twenty bucks in the Hong Kong outdoor markets. The irony was that the “cheap” Japanese movements they used were actually top-notch.

I like watches a little bit and I have a couple. I'm getting old now so I have some savings and I could afford Rolex (one! just one!) but I choose instead to buy from a brand called Orient. Japanese, precision automatic mechanical movements. Accuracy on par with the best swiss watches (I measured one to about 2 seconds per day lost which is outstanding for a mechanical watch). Very good quality for under $200 at the time. I'm quite pleased with that decision.

I'm assuming that eventually Rolex will run out of Oligarchs and Sheiks to sell to and will once again deign to accept money from the unwashed normal people. But not from me.

I haven't worn a watch in 20 years as clocks are all around us now, the computer I'm typing this on, the cellphone I have with me at all times and the clock in my car. I actually want to get away from having the time constantly in my face.

When I did wear one, it was a Seiko, a Swatch or something like that. Something I could afford to scratch, break or lose. Don't think I ever spent over $100 on one.

The Rolex watches look nice and I'm sure they are of excellent quality. But it never appealed to me to have one. I would be constantly worried about scratching it or having it stolen. Maybe if I was super rich and had bodyguards I would wear one.

My wife keeps her one real pearl necklace in our safe. She has other sets of imitation pearl necklaces in her jewelry box for everyday use. Personally, I can't tell the difference when she's wearing them - and that gets her madder than hell.

I wish! I’d never spend that kind of cash for a watch. Diamond earrings? Maybe. Guns and ammo? You betcha, LOL! :)

Yes, you have to know the right people. My guy sold me 3 for $100 the other day.

Correct.

They want the right people wearing their products.

Rolex came to my IDF unit 20 years ago and gave us free watches with NATO bands (I was given a stainless Daytona) bc they liked photos of pilots with their watches.

Still use it everyday. Fantastic timepiece.

What is the difference between a real Rolex and a cheap knock-off? They both tell time and look good on your wrist. You know its fake—but no one else does. Its just a thing.

In a similar vein you can get all the latest models on the grey market for a marked up price. 2 or 3 times retail price but they are easily available. So instead of a Submariner for 10 to 12 k it’ll cost you something in the 20s. Rolex fanboys just bewail the added cost

I too enjoy Orient watches and Seiko’s.

I have a Seiko solar diver in stainless I picked it up new for under $500. I wear it everyday whether working outside or in the office. Super durable and great looking. Even had a Rolex owner ask me once if it was a Rolex.

Resale value, probably. If I buy an expansive thing, I rationalize it by considering I could always sell it if not at my cost, then at a small markdown.
