As a disclaimer I was not in the military but do know a lot about rifles. I like the M4 due to it light cartridge and one can carry many rounds and if you do not have on body armor it will kill you. It will not penetrate body armor. I would think a squad of a mix of M4 5.56 and the old M14 7.62-51would be more effective than one armed with just the new weapon essentially a .270 which is an excellent round.

War dogs please comment.

Oh boy that would be nice. I can sit at the range all day and shot my M1 and not get sore.

My father sure loved that rifle when he was in the 3RD Army.

Just the ammo is heavy. You didn’t need full auto for the M1, just good marksmanship. The BAR or M1919 were for full auto.

So ... anyone buy a $hit Load of Sig stock lately? You’ll make a killing in the near future.

Sounds like a way for the government to get rid of .223 and .556 ammo. Anyone fire .223? Kiss it bye bye.

New round is designed to defeat today’s widely available body armor.

Thank you for cutting to the point.

Our troops are running into more enemy combatants wearing body armor and the 5.56 doesn't cut it, especially at a farther distances.

Well, here’s my cent and a half. I know nothing about the platform, besides reviews that laud it. I’m all in favor of the larger, more powerful cartridge. Except for close quarters combat (no tree growth either) the 5.56x45 is wholly inadequate. The high chamber pressure compared to the 7.62x51 is a problem, as is the # of rounds/weight of ammo load. (I don’t know what the ballistics are, but a LONG RANGE cartridge is a MUST (as well as one that defeats today’s armor...for now). I’m NOT recoil sensitive, nor should any COMBAT troop be...it’s NOT a 10 gauge!

COST? The larger, more effective cartridge is inevitable.
Cost is therefore NOT a consideration. I only wish it was ALL AMERICAN MADE!

Especially in this era of overwhelming firepower. I don’t expect these specialized rounds will be cheap.

So are they gonna issue rip-proof gloves with it? It looks like a meat cleaver for at least one hand.... so many nip and rip points....

MIXED AMMO is pretty much a logistical horror story, to be avoided whenever possible on the squad/platoon/company/etc. level. Yes, BMG is still used, but that’s a different matter.

260 Remington with a different casing to handle higher pressures.

When I drive by the Sig range/factory in Epping NH on my way to work, they have just about finished a HUGE new building on the front of their property.

I was assuming for more that a year now (watching them build this new building) ... “boy, they must have some huge contract coming to spend that money”.

Now I know.

The place is very cool. The main road in has a sign “Open to the Public”. When you drive down their road and pull up to their Sales building and then walk inside, you think you just walked into gun heaven.

Sure looks like it.
Apparently, they are producing an all brass, lower pressure round for the civilian market, for those that need the lastest and bestest.

I read that they mandated that Lake City must use dirty-burning WWII powders.

“Not only will it have a short barrel life but it has to be used with a silencer “

I think that’s what it has: it’s called a “smuzzle”

After 100+ years of warfare, why are we still using rifles and bullets?
