I asked the same question after watching Aliens recently for the 50th time.

The Marines are still using shotguns?

Bring back the M1 Garand! For when you want what you hit to stay hit.

The issue is Type 4 body armor that can stop 5.56x45mm and other intermediate cartridge rifles. The 5.56 was good enough when body armor was not widely available. Now that everyone wears kevlar and plate carriers, the 5.56 simply does not hit hard enough for the threats the army now faces.

Anybody here actually have any personal experience using the new Sig Sauer?

Looks pretty zippy. I’ll stay old school, for now. 30-06, .223, 9mm, .38Spl, .44 Mag, .22Wmr and .22LR.

I use most of those calibers and have means to launch them. The cost of ammo has cut into my habit of weekly range trips. Prior to 2000, my wife and I would burn through 1200 rds of 38SPL each week. I reloaded, so it was not a huge financial burden. Of late, a cheap box of 115 gr 9mm x 50 rds is priced at $18. That's about 3x what I paid in 2000.

1. Finally, a caliber that will “answer the mail” over any combat distance And achieve penetration through heavy foliage, walls and light vehicles - and most types of body armor.

2. A weapon with a good gas piston design (instead of that stupid Stoner self - polluting gas tube/piston in the bolt. Ever tried firing full-auto with suppressor? You gas yourself so bad you can’t see anything.

3. I’ve hear all the indignation from the M16/M4 shooters about the “terrible recoil”. I carried a full auto M14 in combat: that weapon always worked, and killed reliably from point-blank to 600 m and beyond and was a sweetheart to handle.

Sounds like a real battle rifle is coming back! Only took them 55 years!

I believe that Garand originally had a 10-round .276 Pedersen cartridge design that became the .30 M1. The Army didn’t want to change cartridges.

“After 100+ years of warfare, why are we still using rifles and bullets?”

Because they still beat Bows and Arrows.....

Between the weapons weight and all the optics/rangefinders etc, they plan to put on this thing is going to be a serious boat anchor. Not to mention the reduced ammo loadout.

Why they don’t go for a bullpup design I don’t know. Compact, shortens overall length for a longer more accurate barrel, could ease commonality issues with magazines...

Word!

It's amazing the number of people crying over the replacement of a rifle and cartridge that only exists because of people who whined that a real rifle weighed too much and kicked them too hard. Essentially the pot smoking wimps of the '60's weren't half the men that their WWII era fathers were and demanded a puzzified rifle and round so their vaginas wouldn't hurt. A battle rifle exists to kill the enemy, not to avoid scuffing your nail polish. It's long past time we kicked the 5.56 to the curb and fielded a real rifle.

Patience. They’ll have a surplus of M4’s by Christmas.

To be honest, I don’t really know, but SIGSauer has a very complex German/Swiss/American genealogy. Has an American offshoot in NH, but I don’t know if it has a manufacturing facility there, or just imports.

Good, well respected products. My major concern is the high chamber pressure, and consequent barrel wear. I was quite partial to the M-14, especially w/shortened barrel @ +/- 60k psi pressure as opposed to the 6.8x51 Sig @ 80k psi...but I don’t know about the ballistics downrange. If they’re similar, I’d opt for the M-14...but then again, it ain’t my decision.

Well, that answers my question about whether they manufacture in NH. THANKS!

In 69 posts you’re the first to mention the gas piston design.

Yes, definitely a good call.

Yep. I would personally prefer the M-14 over any of these: superior brush-busting power.

Design a sabot cartridge for special uses, as with the .30-06. (Maybe there is such a one; I don’t know.)
