I will admit, penetration and knockdown being inadequate is something I know little of. My understanding is that it was more volume of fire, and ability to engage out to 300 meters is what Germany was going for when originally fielded the Sturmgewehr and 7.92 Kurz cartidge. I know a little more on the how and why we ultimately chose 5.56 mm. I might recommend looking into Chris Bartocchi on this one, he has a YouTube channel that’s also the same name as his company Small Arms Solutions. He’s has a wealth of knowledge on these things, particularly the development of the M-16 and M-4.

I like the .308 for pentrating body armor. Hornady made a tungsten core round for DoD that is sweet as all get out. You can kill an engine block with it too!

A quick search of the specs shows that the 6.8x51 SIG Fury had more kinetic energy than the 5.56x45 NATO...by far. (3653J vs 1755J).

That, in of itself, makes me interested to see it’s actual performance in field tests.

Making NATO ammo compatibility a thing of the past.

Oh, and that was the idea with the intermediate cartridges, volume of fire, manageable recoil, and a modest range for engaging point targets.

Launching bullets in the military is a complex issue.

They are claiming that they need a bigger bullet to penetrate the body armor that so many Soldiers now wear.

I’m just glad they did away with those old 45s.

You could be pretty sure the bullet would come out of the barrel, but all bets were off after that.

I've been much annoyed with the 5.7x28. My wife owns the original FN version. I waited for the Ruger. Either way, the ammo has become prohibitively expensive. My Ruger is still NIB, unfired. There is some "glue" involved in manufacturing 5.7x28 that makes it more expensive.

I recently saw a Youtube video on a new 4.6x30 round that is in an all brass case. Cheap to manufacture. It is offered by HK

I had a Montagnard company of 90-110 yards. My two SSG’s and I took them to an ARVN range to zero in their new M16’s. When one sees a simple calf wound totally take all a VC tax collector’s entire calf and other tissue to his foot and put him in shock one might like a 5.56. My rhade yards loved the M16.

I had a Sergeant Major who told me he only used tracer in his M-16 in Vietnam.

He said it was for humanitarian reasons.

They cauterized the wounds.

Another guy I really miss.

They are I guess doing this to ostensibly increase the range to jump up from 400 to 650 meters. They could have just put a 20 inch barrel on the M4.

How is that going to more than double the weight of the bullet?

The 5.56 has been a marginal round from the beginning and it's inadequacy showed itself even more when we started fighting in the desert with it's increased ranges. It's long overdue that the military deployed a better round.

Not only will it have a short barrel life but it has to be used with a silencer and is very difficult to control on full auto fire.

These issues have been brought up over and over again on various forums including FR.

My question is how are we going to get other NATO countries to adopt this? In some cases they rid themselves of a boatload of 5.45x39 Soviet to get 5.56 NATO. Now we turn around and ask them to get completely new rifles and ammo, again?

Ballistically, not crazy. I wouldn’t mind having a bolt action, long range competition rifle taking this cartridge.

Economically insane. I’m sure Biden, Austin and Milley got serious kickbacks for this decision.

Just bring back the M1-Garand and be done with it.
