This new cartridge has chamber pressures substantially higher than a lot of sporting rounds that have traditionally been known as barrel burners. I have to think these are going to need very frequent barrel changes.

The first model of the M16 (M16A1), which was used in Vietnam, was fraught with functional and design flaws.
These included such issues as a faulty release button on the magazine, a poor barrel design which was very easy to bend, inaccurate firing, and even a tendency to overheat.

I thought several countries tried the intermediate rounds (ww2 Japan Ariska for example with the 6.5 , and the Swedes for that matter and found them good for soft targets like flesh that they didn’t have knockdown or penetration power on objects) and didn’t like them?

Yeah, basically a short action .270 magnum at 80,000 psi, with a stainless steel belt on the base of each cartridge.
Not cheap to produce, I’d guess.

They are I guess doing this to ostensibly increase the range to jump up from 400 to 650 meters. They could have just put a 20 inch barrel on the M4.
