Bette Midler Blasted for Telling Moms to ‘Try Breastfeeding!’ Amid Formula Shortage
New York Post ^ | May 13, 2022 | Natalie O'Neill

Bette Midler urged moms to simply “TRY BREASTFEEDING” amid the crippling breast formula shortage — and was widely slammed for the “obtuse” and ignorant comment Friday.

The 76-year-old “Beaches” star was responding to a tweet from MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle Thursday night that declared the “baby formula shortage reveals an amazing secret oligopoly” of three companies owning “90%” of the market.

The Divine Ms. M shot back, “TRY BREASTFEEEDING! It’s free and available on demand,” prompting a firestorm of criticism from parents.

I was an underweight preemie in the early ‘50s and my doctor put me on the Pet milk/Karo syrup “formula.”

A year later I was fat little piggy.

I’d be surprised if she had any actual experience with breast feeding. She obviously doesn’t understand it at all.

I have to admit I keep saying the same thing every time I read an article about the baby formula shortage. “You have breasts!” Like, what did mothers do before baby formula was invented? Let their babies starve?

I believe I got cow’s milk.

Baby formula was considered a ripoff intended for Third World mothers when I was a teenager.

Not all babies take to it or tolerate it. Some don’t thrive on it and have special needs. Some women simply can’t nurse, or run out of milk.

Lots of babies grew up in the old days with health problems caused by nutritional deficiencies.

I believe moms can lose the ability to breast feed if they do not do so.

Most women can produce enough milk for their babies without the need for formula.

But, it can take a lot of time and effort. Plus, once a baby is weaned, the mother might not be able to produce milk again.

Every now and then this harridan pops up for attention. I used to love her in the 80s and 90s. Then she really opened her mouth.

Wet nurses used to be a big thing over a hundred years, ago. The mother wasn’t producing enough milk or she passed in childbirth.

I saw one woman comment she had just adopted, so what now?

Totally out of touch hammerhead.

My mom and all her siblings had cow’s milk. She was born in 1917.

There is an obvious health advantage for breast feeding, but it’s not possible in all cases for a variety of reasons. For example: some babies are allergic, some mothers have can’t do it, or the mother may have a health condition that makes it unadvisable. (Or have to take a medication that make sit unadvisable.)

Like, what did mothers do before baby formula was invented? Let their babies starve?

It was called failure to thrive and was a common cause of infant death.

So, perhaps ration the ‘formula’ to those who cannot breastfeed? How about importing ‘formula’ from PRC (Politically Repressive Canada, that is)?

Short term solutions until the FDA FINALLY clears production again at the locked down plant.

Many did starve. Or grew up malnourished.
