Development of a lithium-air battery with an energy density over 500 wh/kg
Science Daily ^ | January 20, 2022 | National Institute for Materials Science, Japan

Posted on 01/28/2022 10:05:54 AM PST by M. Dodge Thomas

Researchers have developed a lithium-air battery with an energy density of over 500Wh/kg -- significantly higher than currently lithium-ion batteries. The research team then confirmed that this battery can be charged and discharged at room temperature. In addition, the team found that the battery developed by the team shows the highest energy densities and best cycle life performances ever achieved. These results signify a major step toward the practical use of lithium-air batteries.

“Ev’s aren’t free market Ev’s are the result of companies being forced to obey BS greenie laws from California”

You folks crack me up. Do some research why the car companies are all going towards EV’s. IT has NOTHING to do with the environment.

EV’s take a 1/3 of the labor to produce and 1/2 the parts. NO more billion spent on warranty work because the EV motors has only one moving part. It is all about minimizing labor and maximizing profit.

As Rush always said..follow the money. Large corporations in this country set and make the laws not politicians.

“If not lithium, what?”

The SSB do not use lithium (though some ssb still use small amounts).. I do not know what they use.

We need sodium batteries, dagnabbit. The ocean is full of sodium.

Lithium is not all that abundant. We will likely run out completely world wide long before all the lithium powered devices need to eliminate IC engines are produced.

History shows that scarcity (and accompanying high prices) are the biggest driver for development of new techologies. No one would have developed directional drilling or fracking if oil just gushed out of the ground like it did for Jed Clampett. The best way to speed the development of new energy sources and storage mechanisms is to use up all the fossil fuels as soon as possible.

In full disclosure, I’m doing my part ;-)

I think the real tech of the future will be those that efficiently recycle the lithium out of older replaced or junked batteries.

Researchers have developed a lithium-air battery with an energy density of over 500Wh/kg

To put that in perspective 1 gallon of gasoline has an energy density of 11,620 Wh/kg

Air....my first question is VOLUME? What is the volumetric size of this compared to a similarly capacity-sized LI-ION battery?

Yet it is virtually free cabin heat whenever needed. Heat that doesn’t drain a battery in the middle of a blizzard on I-95 stuck just a few miles outside of DC for 12 hours. We can agree that the heat by product eats up a lot of the energy capacity difference but you aren’t suggesting it eats up the WHOLE 24X advantage, are you? THAT! I’d find difficult to believe, frankly.

You’re crazy if you think that’s the reason.
Sure that’s part of it.
They sell a product. They have to sell a product to make money.
Most of the planet will not be using, Nor want ev’s. Other countries you can buy manual transmission trucks for 15-20k still, because they’re not forced by those countries to install complex electrical systems prone to failure by law. People like those cheap simple cars. I wanted to bring a 2016 ford ranger, 5 banger diesel with a 6 speed manual into america, from mexico.,Woulda been able to get it 8 k cheaper after all the importing fees, then my 2016 escape I ultimately got. Woulda gotten better mileage as well. Couldn’t import it because it didn’t pass emission laws.

They’re switching to electrical because they’re being forced by US.

So far by law in USA.
Mandated OBD systems, reverse cameras, tpms sensors, internal trunk latches, airbags, computer emissions systems. also of note is by law, they are forced to provide lifetime warranty on all airbags and other restraint systems including seatbelts and the clocksprings they wire airbags through on the steering wheels. Those are off the top of my head, plus they get fined if their “fleet wide mpg” isn’t something outrageous like 30mpg. Which is only possible with ev’s. Why else was VW cheating emissions tests? Because their expectations are impractical with current technology combined with their bs emissions.

Do some research before telling me to do some research.
I won’t deny you have a point, but as I said pimping evs will reduce their market, which is not what a company wants to do ever.
Forcing your customer to buy something they don’t want means they won’t buy except at gunpoint.

“Anyone with even a basic understanding if thermo engines knows that most of that energy is lost to heat and not available to power the car.”

Ice efficiencies range from 20 to 35%.

So even at 20% gas has about 5 times the usable energy density than the LA battery.

Just the facts.

If you could make that work . . .

Man that would be something. I remember reading about how the capacitor was first invented/discovered. Bathtub full of oil and two big copper plates connected to big cables.

You imagine touching both plates?

“Forcing your customer to buy something they don’t want means they won’t buy except at gunpoint.”

200,000 PAID preorders for the Ford Lightning and Ford cut off orders..that is not buying at gunpoint.

Tesla sold 495k in 2020 and 900k in 2021 and could have sold 200k more but supply chain issues held them back.

In regards why car companies want EV’s. Their eventual goal is to get rid of the dealer and have consumers buy direct. Ford announced they will no longer build a vehicle unless it is pre sold to a customer this starts in 2023.

My client owns a large regional Chryser dealership. The regional rep said when EV”s come into play 75-80’s of his mechanic staff/service writers will no longer be needed. Service work is where they make all their money.

Millenials and younger do not want to go to a dealer they want to buy online ala, Carvana. Just ask any insurance agent, accountant etc who still comes into their office ..old geezers 50 on up.

“Most of the planet will not be using, Nor want ev’s.”

Norway, Finalnd, UK have sold more EV’s than diesel.

Ford ‘s new hybrid pickup the maverick so many they stopped taking order at over 200k sold.

You may not want an EV (yet) but plenty of people find them to suit their needs.

Another quick google search shows that in Norway for example, EV sales are artificially bolstered by 'economic incentives' imposed by the government:

In addition to non-monetary incentives, all-electric cars and vans are exempt from all non-recurring vehicle fees, including purchase taxes, and 25% VAT on purchase, making electric car purchase price competitive with conventional cars. Also, a tax reduction for plug-in hybrids went into effect starting in July 2013.

Which supports SPDSHDW's earlier opinion that that EV mania is fueled by politics, and not the traditional reasons of efficiency, simplicity, ease of manufacture, availability etc. This would all be fringe technology and the playthings of the wealthy if it were not for the heavy hand of government.

All the major automobile manufacturers are making investments in solid state batteries. They have to or potentially get left behind.

By "Get Left Behind" you mean missing out on a government check

Electric plus the ability to remote shut off the car (in democrat bill) is one reason plus you would be charged per mile. A constant toll road.

Electric rates are near 20 cents a kw in California due to using the money to pay state pensions and to cover up the higher cost of solar and windmills. Other states are half the cost.

Calif democrats block oil and gas drilling and want to shut down what they have now. They are going to block new natural gas hookups and outlaw generators so when they shut off the electric power due to what they say is high winds you sit in the dark. Shutdown because they block the clearing of brush by the power lines.... plus there are cases where people find their a/c temp has been turned up remotely or shut off by the power companies after a smart meter is installed.

They also drain the water from reservoirs instead of storing it for droughts. They want to remove dams as well.

Crazy people get in power and this is the result.

Hey! I did not know that we were allowed to actually make sense on this forum, be careful, or you will be banned. /S (the same thing happens in construction, install is quick, but (more) parts cost more.)( The corporation's make more and the actual installers make less.)

Bleed the buyer/middle class dry.
