‘WE ALL QUIT’: How America’s Workers Are Taking Back Their Power
Motherboard, Vice ^ | 7/23/2001 | Lauren Kaori Gurley

Posted on 07/27/2021 6:08:41 AM PDT by Sixgun Symphony

Motherboard spoke to economists and historians about why fast food and retail workers around the country are suddenly quitting en masse.

Something remarkable is happening in fast food establishments, retail stores, and restaurants across America. You may have seen photos of it go viral. You may have even experienced it in real life if you've dined at a Chili's or Applebee's and the hostess apologizes for extra-long wait times.

“WE ALL QUIT, SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE,” disgruntled employees posted in giant letters on a sign outside a Burger King in Lincoln, Nebraska earlier this month.

Last year I noticed that it seemed like only the lowest paid workers (fast food, retail) were working when everyone else got a paid vacation.

I’m sure these food service workers have lots of other skills that will get them a great paying job somewhere else.

That walkout will look great on their resumes.

Part time workers are not eligible for unemployment benefits.

Businesses hire their low-tier workers as part timers, to avoid having to give them benefits like health insurance.

This is a very real problem.
Two times in the last month I have waited for almost ONE HOUR in a restaurant for a meal. The answer when we asked why was “Only one cook.”

First, there are fewer kids. In Spain, Russia, & Japan this is already a shocking reality. China is now TWO YEARS older than the USA on average and is gaining a shocking six months every year on us (i.e., they are avg 40, we are 38, but in six more months they will be an average of 40.5 and we’ll still be 38).

Second, those kids and/or service workers who ARE current employees have been brainwashed into thinking they should be getting Tom Brady-type pay.

Third, the China Virus convinced many they can “work from home.” No. This was meant as a temp fix, not a livestyle.

This is really good news. Parents, get your teenagers working again. Take back those jobs that are not meant for a living wage and start learning some skills.

“Part time workers are not eligible for unemployment benefits.”

Yes, they are. There is a minimum earned amount, but hours worked is not a determining factor.

Opens opportunity for some, i.e. those who have a good work ethic, and those who are developing robot cooks/servers.

Free market, people have no obligation to stay at a job they do not like, but better stay off the taxpayer dollars.

Taking back their power???

In other words - they are taking MY MONEY. Why work when the gubmint will pay you to stay home and do squat.

Some power.

They never had power. Even now, various groups are lobbying to allow even more illegals to become 'citizens'. Wages have stagnated for years across the spectrum for many workers.

In the past two weeks I traveled across several states for work. I stayed in a couple hotels and an Airbnb. Eating in restaurants mostly. I found the locally owned places very accommodating, with attentive wait staff and fast service. The combo gas station/convenience store places were next efficient. Sheetz was one, they advertise a higher pay level than others and it would seem to pay off. Every Sheetz I got fast service, made to order food well prepared and smiling faces. Then I tried an Applebee’s...over priced, poor service (I sat at my table for 20 minutes before anyone acknowledged me), food was poorly prepared and sadly presented. Finally was a bob Evans in Ohio. They obviously lack employees, but the staff could have done a better job of handling the shortage. From the snotty hostess to dried out food, had to get my own silver ware, to a flailing wait staff it was by far the worst.

The point of all this seems to be that the companies that take care of the employee end up taking care of the customer and as a result get repeat business.

The covid excuse is getting old. As a paying customer I don’t care about covid or a business shortage of workers. If you can’t give good service then shut your doors and just stop.

As a result of my trip Applebee’s is way down on my list with Bob Evans below that. This attitude will carry on for years, with these places being my last choice. I can say this...I ate at waffle house twice (different stores) and, despite the rep I had excellent service and well prepared food in a clean, friendly environment.

Does economics not figure in to this anymore? Enjoy those $10 Big Macs coming soon.

Go out to eat very seldom anymore. I especially avoid fast-food joints like SpitDonalds and Booger Fling. And, of course, that includes Chick-fil-A unless I need my shoes shined.

We cook healthy, filling and GREAT meals at home.

Robot cooks and contactless take-out or delivery.. Restaurants with only a few skilled workers in far cheaper real estate - all they have to do is redefine “eating out” to mean “eating food preapared to order in your own house”.

The need for food is the same but covid has changed the delivery model permanently. Door Dash, Grubhub, and Uber.

In Texas, we have Buc’ees. They’re expanding to other states in the Southeast. Immaculate restrooms, great service, and their brisket sandwiches are wonderful. Their starting salaries are in the $14+ range. I’ve yet to see a Buc’ees that was short staffed.

The only decent sausage gravy I've ever had was at Bob Evans.

Oh well, it's probably best for my health I never go there again.

The workers better get higher wages because the quality of service equals the size of gratuity. Poor service, poor food, no tip. I believe automatic tipping regardless of service has led to poorer service and product for many, many years. If I am working for minimum wage and must supplement my income with tips, I will be the most courteous and accommodating waiter you have ever seen. Great service equals great tips.
