The workers better get higher wages because the quality of service equals the size of gratuity. Poor service, poor food, no tip. I believe automatic tipping regardless of service has led to poorer service and product for many, many years. If I am working for minimum wage and must supplement my income with tips, I will be the most courteous and accommodating waiter you have ever seen. Great service equals great tips.

Please do not stiff your server’s tip over the food quality. Our family is heavily represented in the restaurant industry, from a full fledged chef to a grill cook, to a restaurant manager, a bartender, and a regional director. All of them will tell you the server is NEVER responsible for what happens in the kitchen. This would include a wait for your food if the kitchen is short staffed.
