Please I need input- medical

First let me preface by saying I apologize if too much personal info but I didn't know who to ask. My father just got put into the hospital with either bladder/kidney or prostrate issue. They found blood in the urine. They catheterized him but he is still feeling the incredible pressure/pain where he feels he needs to urinate constantly and he hasn't slept for days (driving him crazy). The nurses and doctor say this is normal. When a man gets catheterized do men still continue to feel pressure and pain? With women it takes the pressure away but the doctor said with men they will continue to feel pain and pressure. I just don't want my dad suffering unnecessarily in the hospital so I am asking for input. Really appreciate it and sorry if I got too personal. I just hate to see my dad suffering.

They should give him liquid morphine or other pain reliever to help with the pain.

I would expect that if the prostate were the issue, then the pressure/pain is from that, which would be why women get relief and men don’t.

Just my guess.

having went through in-house hospice with a relative, there’s no need for him to suffer. Tell them to give him relief or you want another doctor/facility. No need for the pain.

when they run that tube up your junk...it’s the most miserable experience imaginable. All you think about it that tube in your junk, and it ADD to whatever pain you were feeling.

Often there is a sensation of needing to urinate when there is a catheter — this is normal

It sounds like he is having bladder spasm. Ask the physician if a B&O suppository would help — this specifically is the treatment of bladder spasm. However, beware, you will get a lot of advice including mine — consider carefully that you have asked a health question on an internet where qualifications cannot be assured.

An enlarged prostate (very normal with age) pressing against the bladder will reduce bladder capacity and cause him to urinate more often. Pain could be due to a urinary tract infection. Not sure about the blood in the urine. Is he getting any imaging done ?

Catheters can make the bladder of both men and women spasm, so there is a sense of having to pee very badly even though the bladder is empty. Perhaps some antispasmodics can be administered?

Tell them he needs pain meds. One of the problems with this “opioid crisis” is that people with a legitimate need for pain relief get denied it. So you may have to be proactive and keep after the docs to get him the pain relief he needs.

Pain or discomfort? Pain/discomfort usually goes away if it’s just the catheter. There will be a need to void a lot though.

had a sonogram and maybe an MRI (not sure on the MRI). They are waiting results of the cultures they took.

In my case, it was the thought of that thing going up the fire hose that was so painful to me, not the action of the urologist checking me for bladder cancer, which was not so painful. Fortunately, the urologist was very reassuring and said "I will get you through this", which really helped. Now, after the procedure was over there was a good bit of residual pain, but the pain medication handled that, and 24 hours later it subsided.

They can do an ultrasound and check for catheter placement. Sometimes it can get shoved up too far in the bladder resulting in crimping and folding over of the line which can cause pain and spasm. Sometimes the catheter needs to be pulled out and placed in again.

Is he actually passing urine?

Might be a kidney stone which the cauterization will do little or nothing to relieve.

They should be giving him pain killers in rather large doses.

Age of father?? You said they found blood in urine. Finding a few blood cells in a urine specimen is not that unusual.. seeing blood in urine with naked eye is unusual and often associated with passing a kidney stone. An enlarged prostate can cause a real feeling of needing to pee. Did they do a PSA blood test and a MRI or a rectal exam to determine the size of the prostate.
