Wearing a face mask to prevent the spread of the coronavirus has become a controversial topic in the U.S., with some people even resorting to violence over it. A report has discovered why mask requirements are such sticking point for some: They think these mandates infringe on their rights.
The report, released by the Brookings Institution on Monday, surveyed nearly 5,900 Americans between early June and early July about their mask usage in public. The researchers discovered that 20 percent of those who participated in the survey were not wearing masks in public to stop the spread of the virus, despite state mask mandates or recommendations.
Of that group, 40 percent who dont wear a mask say its because its their right as an American to not wear a mask, while 24 percent say they dont wear a mask because it is uncomfortable.
Its worth noting that 18 percent of those who dont wear a mask say its because they do not have access to a mask, 11 percent say they think the virus is a conspiracy, and 7 percent do not wear a mask because theyre concerned about being viewed as a criminal, with 67 percent of men of color who dont wear a mask citing the latter reason.
The report also found that 64 percent of Americans believe that their right to not have to wear a mask or scarf over their face is more important than reducing the likelihood of contracting the virus or spreading it to others. -----
Mask usage is required by law in 34 states and the District of Columbia, according to AARP.
--- People who claim its their right to avoid wearing a mask are misunderstanding rights, Dr. Amesh A. Adalja tells Yahoo Life. You dont have a right to infect other people.

“And dont forget their food pyramid. “
About “experts” my mother pointed out, one month eggs are bad for us and we need to give them up entirely. Then, the next month they are good for us. The same is true of margarine vs. butter. Corn oil vs any other oil. The “exerts” tick tock back and forth on every subject. (Today it’s just to get clicks and you can find articles by the same author pushing diametrically opposed views.) As my mother said, Just do everything in moderation and ignore the experts.
“They think these mandates infringe on their rights.”
Only because they do.
I would wear that for fun. It’s just as effective as the types of masks most wear.
We got masks from Cigna. A small flimsy piece of see thru material that doesn’t cover and falls down because the loops are too long. Laughable and from an insurance company!
I think all masks sold in retails stores say that.
My rights don’t end where your fears begin.
Dr. Amesh A Adalja doesn't understand rights at all. If rights are involved so are the lawsuits for shutting down businesses for no reason at all.
Where is Dr. Amesh A. Adalja's comment on governors marching with rioters and along with the CDC declaring that rioters are exempt from restrictions.
Who's paying for Dr. Amesh A. Adalja's grant funding? Is it we the taxpayers?
And especially right now, it’s a way to ruin the economy.
Yes, there is always that.
:: mandated by law ::
In a republican form of government, a “legal mandate” is decided by a Legislature and passed to the Executive to uphold.
We are operating under a tyranny of vindictive egotists that make requirements by whim and fiat.
Sadly, a large portion of our society goes along because they perceive the egotists to be their betters...the experts.
I wear one because my pulmonary specialist told me to wear one in a crowd.....10 years ago.
I agree it’s your right not to wear one.
It’s my right to stay away from you.
Masks are absolutely ineffective.
They are simply a sign of submission.
This freak foreigner is telling me I”M INFECTED?????
Where does he? get off????
Live free or die. Seriously. My ancestors sacrificed lives and fortunes, sailed across the Atlantic on a rickety boat, fought the British Army, and survived ACTUAL diseases to ensure my liberty (and yours — you’re welcome). You really think I want to squander all of THAT hiding behind a tyrant-mandated piece of quilting cloth?
SERIOUSLY? “Living like this is NOT “living”.
Another issue is the moral peacocking. That yes, you must wear A mask, but don’t you wear an American flag or all lives matter one.
I see the same thing: folks with the most obvious co-morbidities going around unmasked. Thats called freedom.
There are countless studies and stats to back up your seat belt point.
There are zero studies or stats to back up your mask point.
The Grave yard is full of people that wish theyd wore a mask, just like the people that wish theyd wore a seat belt.
Not true unless you don’t believe the propaganda that the mask is only to protect others against you. Not one “expert” has claimed that the mask protects you from them. Seat belts actually do save lives. The masks are nothing more than symbolism of conformity to the tyranny of the state.
We know they want the mask to be a sign of a branded slave. Amazing they would fight so hard for it. But Yahoo is a nest of enemy propagandists.
And there’s always the fact that they make everyone look like puppets.
>>The word expert is very conveniently used by the left, the media.<<
Similarly, when someone uses the term “consensus” in scientific discussions it means they know nothing about science.
