Wearing a face mask to prevent the spread of the coronavirus has become a controversial topic in the U.S., with some people even resorting to violence over it. A report has discovered why mask requirements are such sticking point for some: They think these mandates infringe on their rights.
The report, released by the Brookings Institution on Monday, surveyed nearly 5,900 Americans between early June and early July about their mask usage in public. The researchers discovered that 20 percent of those who participated in the survey were not wearing masks in public to stop the spread of the virus, despite state mask mandates or recommendations.
Of that group, 40 percent who dont wear a mask say its because its their right as an American to not wear a mask, while 24 percent say they dont wear a mask because it is uncomfortable.
Its worth noting that 18 percent of those who dont wear a mask say its because they do not have access to a mask, 11 percent say they think the virus is a conspiracy, and 7 percent do not wear a mask because theyre concerned about being viewed as a criminal, with 67 percent of men of color who dont wear a mask citing the latter reason.
The report also found that 64 percent of Americans believe that their right to not have to wear a mask or scarf over their face is more important than reducing the likelihood of contracting the virus or spreading it to others. -----
Mask usage is required by law in 34 states and the District of Columbia, according to AARP.
--- People who claim its their right to avoid wearing a mask are misunderstanding rights, Dr. Amesh A. Adalja tells Yahoo Life. You dont have a right to infect other people.

anyone that sees me in public without a mask and is uncomfortable can simply keep their distance and stay away from me.
Mandates and executive orders need not be followed, until the state legislature makes it a law, and this would be an unconstitutional one.
AMEN!! Isn’t this the same crowd that’s always lecturing us with “My body my choice’’?
The Grave yard is full of people that wish they’d wore a mask, just like the people that wish they’d wore a seat belt.
The government cannot tell us what to wear. It’s that simple.
“You dont have a right to infect other people.”
Unless it’s Aids, feel free to spread the wealth.
Experts? Experts on what exactly?
The word expert is very conveniently used by the left, the media.
Experts tell us all sorts of absurd things.
Just like guns.
Freedom is the real threat.
Its amusing. Most of the people Whom I know are against the mask rules would be in the top tier of co-morbidities. Old, fat, and with heart disease.
But, go ahead and mingle with the kids.
To each his own.
I don’t wear a mask. Instead, I keep a rabbit’s foot in my pocket. That’s much more effective!
Proof: I’m still healthy!
What grave yard is full of dead people because they didn’t wear masks?
Perhaps in Auschwitz? Nah, doubt a mask would have helped there either.
Define the “threat”.
‘Experts’
should have no problem socially distancing if you wear that mask. Yikes!
You wear a training burqua all you like. I will not.
I am also going to look you in the eye and say hello. This "never look at people while you shuffle past them" is mentally unhealthy.
And call a social worker if someone is trying to kill you.
Im seeing a huge percentage of masks wearers not understanding that the nose is connected to the lungs. They wear a mask UNDER their nose.
To protest I have started wearing my mask, when required, on my chin. Yes, its below my mouth. Now the sign on the door says you must wear a mask, but no example as to HOW is given. So it would seem Im free to choose how I wear my mask.
If my not wearing a mask is going to kill people, I must ask, how long does it take?
Now do AIDS, Doc
