Wearing a face mask to prevent the spread of the coronavirus has become a controversial topic in the U.S., with some people even resorting to violence over it. A report has discovered why mask requirements are such sticking point for some: They think these mandates infringe on their rights.
The report, released by the Brookings Institution on Monday, surveyed nearly 5,900 Americans between early June and early July about their mask usage in public. The researchers discovered that 20 percent of those who participated in the survey were not wearing masks in public to stop the spread of the virus, despite state mask mandates or recommendations.
Of that group, 40 percent who dont wear a mask say its because its their right as an American to not wear a mask, while 24 percent say they dont wear a mask because it is uncomfortable.
Its worth noting that 18 percent of those who dont wear a mask say its because they do not have access to a mask, 11 percent say they think the virus is a conspiracy, and 7 percent do not wear a mask because theyre concerned about being viewed as a criminal, with 67 percent of men of color who dont wear a mask citing the latter reason.
The report also found that 64 percent of Americans believe that their right to not have to wear a mask or scarf over their face is more important than reducing the likelihood of contracting the virus or spreading it to others. -----
Mask usage is required by law in 34 states and the District of Columbia, according to AARP.
--- People who claim its their right to avoid wearing a mask are misunderstanding rights, Dr. Amesh A. Adalja tells Yahoo Life. You dont have a right to infect other people.

Handy Hint: Never read past “Yahoo.”
Experts also said to hide under your desk to protect against a nuclear bomb.
When EVERYTHING is political, NOTHING is political.
When EVERYTHING is racist, NOTHING is racist.
The Socialist Democrats over-played their hand on this one, too, as always.
LIBERATE AMERICA! Just let this stupidity END, already!
“Experts.” Right. I can find “experts” on both side of this issue.
“Experts”
Experts. Can’t live with them.
EXPERT: Nothing but an old drip under pressure.
The ONLY reason why people wear a mask: “Everyone knows you should. It’s on TV and the Internet!”
And don’t forget their food pyramid. Experts brought us that bit of psuedo wisdom also.
What are the design specifications for compliant masks?
Who enforces the law?
What are the penalties?
Who will conduct the prosecutions?
Is guilt assigned without due process?
The boxes of disposable facemasks we buy at the store has this warning on the back: Not for use in healthcare settings.
Why I oppose the mask mandate: I’m literate.
“People who claim its their right to avoid wearing a mask are misunderstanding rights”
Wonderful to get lectures on what our rights are from some Indian Import-A-Doc alien.
Expert: Man from out of town with a brief case.
I do not wear a mask. I had the Chinese flu in January. I am 71 years old and I lived through the flu. I do not see any one wearing a mask that will stop viruses.
It is nothing more than political theater. Symbolism over substance once again. Wear the mask as a symbol of conformity, a symbol of your obedience to the state - nothing more. Politics over science.
I have studied the CDC website. Clearly it says that if you are not symptomatic it is unlikely that you can spread it unless you share utensils, eat or drink after someone, or be withing 6 feet of them for more than 15 minutes at a time. Whether you wear a mask or not will make no difference if you do the things above. If you avoid doing them you will not get it whether or not you wear a mask.
There wasn’t a “because wearing a mask is useless” option? Shite survey..
It has become hijab, a show of compliance with social rules, NOT a health matter.
That’s demonstrated by:
* face masks with zippers for musicians
* demands to wear it when you’re in a teleconference
* demands to wear it alone on a walk
* discussion on making you wear it when alone in your yard
The box of masks says that?? hahah.
