The CDC analyzed more than 7,000 confirmed covid-19 cases across the country in which health officials had a written record about the presence or absence of any underlying medical condition. The preexisting conditions covered in the records include heart and lung diseases, diabetes, chronic renal disease, chronic liver disease, immunocompromised conditions, neurological disorders, neurodevelopmental or intellectual disability, pregnancy, current or former smoker status, and other chronic disease.
The CDC found that, of people requiring admission to an intensive care unit, 78 percent had at least one underlying health condition. Of people hospitalized but not requiring ICU admission, 71 percent had at least one such condition, compared with just 27 percent of people who didnt need to be hospitalized.
Among all the cases analyzed, 10.9 percent of patients had diabetes mellitus, 9.2 had chronic lung disease and 9 percent had cardiovascular disease.
The report did not reach any conclusion about whether the severity of an underlying condition correlated to a more severe covid-19 illness.
Of the 7,160 patients whose chronic illness status was known through health records, 184 died, and 173 of them had an underlying condition, the CDC said. None of the deaths were among people under age 19.

i am too cynical, cause i feel like i can see right through the motivation of this journalist
It’s all data that goes with what the Italians were saying six weeks ago. There’s enough evidence to show older Italians (over 70) surviving through a bout....if they didn’t have issues like blood circulation, diabetes, lung issues, etc. It will be the same way in the US.
When this corona thing started I was more concerned about the hysteria and panic than the virus itself. Now I can see that the hysteria has not disappointed my feelings. We’re not all going to die folks. Not even close. Now we have let the government do what they want and the door is wide open for more of our liberties to leave our country.
We have now committed national suicide. A permanent solution to a temporary problem. A precursor to glowbull warming that succeeded beyond our rulers wildest dreams.
Duh....same as any flu-like virus
Well, been nice knowing you guys.
I bequeath my gung fu to Humblegunner.
Hysterical comments aren't helpful. Take a deep breath, things will work out.
We’ve known this for a month.....at least.
Cool!
I'll need to hose it down with Lysol first, no telling where you've been.
Somehow we survived quarantines from the Flu on 1918, drafts for several wars, mass corruption and theft by local, state and federal officials everywhere, and still the republic lives.
This too will pass....”keep calm and carry on”....
“This too will pass....keep calm and carry on....”
I’m with you. Just because this is happening now doesn’t mean it didn’t happen in the past. During WW2 our economy wasn’t much different from Stalin’s. Every company did what they were told and no company was allowed to get rich off the war effort.
...and then the war ended, and so did nearly all of the central control.
Correct!
I wish Dr. Birx had briefed this information in her first briefing. With this data, individuals can calculate their personal mortality rate and make an informed decision on how to proceed.
At 71 with 2 of the conditions listed, I estimate my personal mortality rate is greater than 25%. I have been self isolating (to the max extent possible) since February 13.
Here's charts from February 11, using data from China:
Maybe more detailed, but it is what has been noted in the death cases since the infections started. Systems weakened in a history of systemic health problems leads to potentially worse outcomes with a Covid-19 infection. Yea, we knew that.
At some point I we must say this whole response has been idiotic, over blown and counterproductive. We have to push back or the government will start rolling this stupidity out every time there is a sniffle.
This will erode our rights and respect for the rule of law, both of which make up foundation for our nation and prosperity.
This is unclear to me:
“Of people hospitalized but not requiring ICU admission, 71 percent had at least one such condition, compared with just 27 percent of people who didnt need to be hospitalized.”
But it’s pretty much straight out of the CDC study, which is also poorly written:
“As of March 28, 2020, U.S. states and territories have reported 122,653 U.S. COVID-19 cases to CDC, including 7,162 (5.8%) for whom data on underlying health conditions and other known risk factors for severe outcomes from respiratory infections were reported. Among these 7,162 cases, 2,692 (37.6%) patients had one or more underlying health condition or risk factor, and 4,470 (62.4%) had none of these conditions reported. The percentage of COVID-19 patients with at least one underlying health condition or risk factor was higher among those requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission (358 of 457, 78%) and those requiring hospitalization without ICU admission (732 of 1,037, 71%) than that among those who were not hospitalized (1,388 of 5,143, 27%).”
- prior medical data on the presence or absence of underlying health conditions (I’ll call it “UHC”) is available to CDC on 7,126 or 5.8% of those 122,653 confirmed cases
- of those 7,126 cases, 2,692 (37.6%), had at least one UHC
- a total of 457 cases were admitted to the ICU, of which 358 were (78%) were UHC (so 6.4% of all cases were sent to ICU)
- another 1,037 cases were admitted to the hospital but not to ICU, of which 732 (71%) had UHC
- of the 5,143 who were not hospitalized, 1,388 (27%) had UHC.
That leaves a missing 525 cases, which is not mentioned in the article body but shows in the chart as “Hospitalization status unknown”.
Most importantly, 73% of hospitalizations were UHC.
This report is poorly written and sloppy, and, worse, the press just repeats it mindlessly.
