At Diet Doctor, we are very clear about defining low-carb. We define ketogenic low carb diets as less than 20 grams of net carbs per day, moderate low carb as 20-50 grams per day, and liberal low carb as 50-100 grams per day. Assuming a 2,000 kcal diet, that equates to <4%, <10% and <20% of total calories.

The latest nutritional epidemiology study out of Harvard, published this week in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, is another misrepresentation of low-carb diets.
-snip-
The lowest of the low-carb eaters still sourced 46% of their calories from carbohydrates. That was the lowest! That is more than twice the amount of our highest level, the liberal low-carb diet, defined as less than 20% carbs. That is really all we need to know about the study. It is painfully clear that any of the conclusions have nothing to do with a low-carb diet.

“Its all thermodynamics.”
That is simply untrue. The law of thermodynamics refers to a CLOSED SYSTEM. We are not. One might as well argue gas mileage is independent of engine efficiency and aerodynamics.

I don’t care who it is if they run a 800 cal/day deficit they will lose a pound every 3 days or 10 pounds/month. It you don’t believe me then stay a fat slob like I was. I DON’T CARE.
I agree with your math and have done the same, and lost weight. But here we’re talking on a macro sense, what works for very large groups of people - that’s where things have changed...from simply not even thinking about calories to thinking about calories, trying to restrict them, and still losing ground (and growing fatter).
While it’s early, so far, for large groups of people, the only diet that does seem to work is low-carb. Either that, or this site is loaded with flat-out liars (which I doubt is the case).
What would happen if you stopped eating altogether? You would lose weigh real fast, probably die. So the trick is finding the amount you can eat between 0 calories and your resting metabolic rate plus any exercise you get during the day. Mine is around 2,000/day. It varies some people have faster metabolisms and some have slower.
I am 76 yrs. old, female, and started Keto diet in December of 2017. I weighed 284 lbs.
I have been quite strict, no “cheating”, kept my total carb grams under 20 daily.
I now weigh 158 lbs and look really good for my age. My health has really improved with excellent lab results, arthritis much improved, great sleep, no hunger.
Find a supportive doctor. They are out there, but you do have to hunt for them.
Research the excellent docs on Youtube.
“It you dont believe me then stay a fat slob like I was.”
But that is kind of the point, central_va! Lots of folks on this thread have STOPPED being fat by doing the OPPOSITE of what you say they MUST do to lose weight!
Your advice - which I tried to follow for decades - FAILED! Intermittent fasting combined with higher fat has succeeded.
And if you don’t care, don’t post. I post BECAUSE I care and because of how much my life has changed in the last year.
This causes your resting metabolism to slow down. That is not good. You can't lay around and expect to lose weight. If you are a lazy slob ( and I was ) you cannot expect to lose weight no matter what exotic diet you are on. It takes DISCIPLINE and some form of exercise to keep the metabolism up otherwise you go into hibernation mode like a bear in winter..
You cannot eat as much fat and protein you want a day. You cannot overeat which is what worries me. There is no discussion on HOW MUCH these keto people eat.
“What would happen if you stopped eating altogether? You would lose weigh real fast...”
No kidding GI! Wow! What penetrating insight!
And yes, I do believe calories also play a role. But by themselves, calories are not sufficient to explain what happens.
I tried low fat / low calories diet. Lost weight on them WHILE FEELING AWFUL! Since I felt awful - weak, nauseated and terrible headaches - I immediately went back to my old way of eating as soon as I could. And gained the weight back.
With IF & a high fat diet, I can cut intake AND feel great. I have no intention of ever going back to my old way of eating. I feel BETTER on this “diet” than I did when eating anything I wanted from the US Food Pyramid.
Good-by sugar. And bread. And potatoes. And lean, dry meat!
Hello cheese, and fatty burgers, and sausage, and eggs! But only between 1200 noon and 6 PM. Sometimes now OMAD - One Meal A Day. When you can feel hunger and still feel like going for a run.....
I can provide some testimony.
Back in 2017 I had emergency surgery resulting the removal of about 6 or so inches of my descending colon. I was able to eat nothing for 10 or so days and had a continuous suction to evacuate my stomach. I was connected continuously to an IV and do not know precisely what it contained. I suppose there was some glucose.
During that time and even for weeks later where I did not eat much, I lost a total of about 20 pounds.
So, like you said, don’t eat and the weight will come off.
Unintended consequences: Last summer, for reasons I don’t know, I lost my appetite and didn’t eat much but remained active. I lost a few more pounds. Te interesting fact is that my A1c level dropped to historic low. My Glucose level is a t record low.
In the process, I am no longer theoretically Type II diabetic
Even on KETO the amount of daily calories consumed has to be kept below the daily calories needed to meet resting metabolism. THIS IS FACT.
Nice!
Central VA. I dont eat in between meals, I dont need too. I stay satiated in between meals and that is called intermittent fasting.
If Im hungry in between meals, then that last meal was a fail. I should have added an avocado or a handful of macadamia nuts. Or coconut manna. BTW, The fat, doesnt always have to be animal fat. Snacking for me, is in the past. Dont need to now.
Calories in, calories out.
“You cannot eat as much fat and protein you want a day. You cannot overeat which is what worries me.”
Yes, you can.
TO A POINT.
I fully agree with you in the sense that someone eating 4,000 calories a day of fatty meat is likely to swell up like a balloon! Hence the Intermittent Fasting part - I want to be hungry sometimes.
It is OK to be hungry. Hungry doesn’t make me feel weak. Or nauseous. Or give me terrible headaches. The fuel I’m eating doesn’t burn itself out, with some converted to body fat, and then drive my body to eat more, more more!
I can go 24 hours without eating and feel GOOD on a run. I can go past a bakery after 18 hours with no desire to go in and eat the top off the table. When your body has switched its hormone cycle to depend on fat instead of carbs, you just do not crave the carbs.
You eat less because you WANT to eat less.
Calories play a role. But our bodies and our lives are more complex than “Calorie in. Calorie out.”
So, do you know how many calories you ate yesterday? What is your resting metabolism? Do you get any physical activity on a daily basis? My guess is is the keto diet is helping keep your daily caloric intake less than or equal to your resting metabolic rate. Which is a good thing. But is still comes down to calories in, calories expended.
Intermittent fasting + heavy weightlifting.
On my diet I am never hungry, ever except maybe just before bed. I’ve lost 40 pounds and haven’t missed one meal.
Yep. In the end that is what it is all about. You even admit you have to fast. LOL. Fasting is for Jesuits and not real people.
