In a new study published in the journal Nature Communications, Greenbaum and his colleagues propose that complex disease transmission patterns can explain not only how modern humans were able to wipe out Neanderthals in Europe and Asia in just a few thousand years but also, perhaps more puzzling, why the end didn't come sooner.
"Our research suggests that diseases may have played a more important role in the extinction of the Neanderthals than previously thought. They may even be the main reason why modern humans are now the only human group left on the planet," said Greenbaum, who is the first author of the study and a postdoctoral researcher in Stanford's Department of Biology.

Likely STDs.
Those neaderthals would jump just about everything?
Wait! The Neantherthals are gone? Bummer. Those guys used to tell the best jokes.

Smaller reproduction bases....deaths outnumbered births. Pretty simple...
I thought about that also, a very plausible theory you have there, sure it wasn’t the other way around? :)

You could be right, especially if the predecessors to Democrats were around back then.
Note the time span they share about how long it actually took for it to happen? What you say makes very good sense considering the actual time span. It didn’t just happen overnight as assumed.
More likely:
STDs.
Those humans would jump just about everything!
Weird, because most people in the world have Neandertal ancestry.
“Our research suggests that (human) diseases may have played a more important role in the extinction of the Neanderthals than previously thought.”
“Research suggests...”
My research suggests that this sounds a lot like another humans are evil project, just like European diseases supposedly wiped out Indians.
Really?
Does their “research” also suggest that Neanderthals were delicious?
Thanks Track9.

The Neandertal Enigma"Frayer's own reading of the record reveals a number of overlooked traits that clearly and specifically link the Neandertals to the Cro-Magnons. One such trait is the shape of the opening of the nerve canal in the lower jaw, a spot where dentists often give a pain-blocking injection. In many Neandertal, the upper portion of the opening is covered by a broad bony ridge, a curious feature also carried by a significant number of Cro-Magnons. But none of the alleged 'ancestors of us all' fossils from Africa have it, and it is extremely rare in modern people outside Europe." [pp 126-127]

High birth rates for every race but white and Asian will cause those to soon become extinct. Then disease and nukes will wipe out the darker pigmented races.
Exactly what happened to the Spartans.
Overall numbers shrank till the could not send out a proper army
Then again, maybe todays arabs are yesterdays neandrthals

Actually it’s the opposite, a former theory was that Modern Humans killed and wiped out the Neanderthals (this would be “Humans are Evil”). This finding here explains that it could have just just been a natural accident caused by diseases and no one’s fault.
Wish folks would find just two minutes to actually read something before jumping to a preconceived conclusion based on emotion.
I think what it is saying is that it influenced both ways. Neanderthals shared immunities against certain diseases with Modern Humans, And Modern Humans shared Immunities against other diseases with Neanderthals. Those who ended up surviving the exchange because they had the best of both immunities combined as hybrids are now us.
