How is it that ever since the government began telling us what to eat, we have gotten fatter and sicker?
In 1977, when the government first set dietary guidelines, the average American male weighed 170 pounds. He now weighs 197. Its not any better for women 145 to 170. And you dont need an academic study to know the same thing is happening to kids. Just look around.
The weight gain has real-life consequences: the percentage of Americans diagnosed with type 2 diabetesa condition that can lead to severe medical issueshas risen from 2% in 1977 to over 9% in 2015. In hard numbers, thats five million people to over 30 million people.
How did this happen?
It all started innocently enough in the 1950s, when President Dwight Eisenhower had a heart attack while in office. Suddenly, the issue of heart health became a national obsession.

*** “If you eat more calories than your activity level and metabolism can burn and you do not poop the excess out because of inefficient digestive absorption they will be stored as fat. This is true even if you are throwing all the buns from your hamburgers away, or living only on bacon” ***
Carbs make you Hungry 3-6 times per day, because of Insulin, use them or not, Eat Fat and you eat once a day if you remember to, then Food/Eating does not run your life.
If you eat Fats and Carbs together, you will definitely Get Fat... No doubt about that
Still a Fact ... You cannot Grow Fat without Insulin... Period so Cut the Carbs and Eat all the Fat you want... You just naturally don’t because you are not Hungry.
Pretty simple plan
There is an important caveat.....watch out when eating nuts, those calories add up quickly. I generally try to stick to no more than a handful a day.
*** “A diet where insulin is virtually unneeded is a workaround, not a cure” ***
You are 180 deg out of wack... shooting Insulin just so you can eat Sugar is the workaround, Not shooting Insulin is the CURE
*** Beer made me fat” ***
I love Beer BUT I just recognize that it is “Liquid Bread” so it is easier to avoid
(still there is Ultralight at 2.6 Carbs per 12oz can so I may still sip a few with the guys)
*** “watch out when eating nuts, those calories add up quickly” ***
I do know ... danged hard to stop...
I did find a way, (If you eat salted nuts) what I did is take a bottle of water, put about 1/4 teaspoon of Magnesium Citrate and 1/2 teaspoon of plain old Cream of Tartar (Potassium that tastes like Lemon)
Takes that Salt craving away ... if it comes back... rinse and repeat.
That is very true... you cannot become fat without insulin. That is because you will be dead without insulin and corpses are unable to “grow fat”. Your body needs insulin for your cells to absorb the fuel in your bloodstream that they need to live. And that fuel is carbohydrates whether or not you get them directly from carbohydrates in your food or your body converts fat or protein to carbohydrate through metabolic processes. Without blood sugar and insulin your brain dies in about 5 minutes.
I am sorry, but you are spreading the very worst kind of misinformation. You have absolutely no understanding of what you are spouting off about. Sometimes people spread nonsense that does little harm... but people who follow your misguided advice will be putting their health at risk. As a general rule of thumb it is better for people keep their mouths shut about subjects they have no true understanding of.

You are the idiot, you keep shooting Insulin (unless you are Type 1 Diabetic then that is the correct thing to do) If you are Type 2 and your Pancreas can still make enough Insulin then you don’t need to be shooting additional Insulin into your system that continues to make you more and more Insulin Resistant.
PS Your Brain Died 5 minutes ago and it didn’t need Insulin to do it ;^)
Pot, meet kettle.
OK you win. We were taught about food groups in the 1960s. It was essentially the same info that the Swedes put into a pyramid shape in the 1970s which is a big whoop di doo, but the info is still better advice than the nonsense that you seem to believe in. Grains have been a staple of peoples’ diets all over the world for centuries and you are afraid to eat them... I trust the judgment of previous generations much more than the current crop of nutritional experts as found on this forum.
It is only possible for people to villainize grains in affluent countries where we can eat just about anything that we want to. Much of the rest of the world would starve without them. Strange thing though, people in countries where grain is still a staple often are thinner more active and healthier than where are here... crazy isn't it.
I read a few books on McDonalds. Used to be hamburgers were cooked on spot from fresh meat - usually grass-fed.
McDonalds made it where you could literally store food in giant freezers for years. I think that is not good.
And yes, soda used to be made from cane sugar, not HFCS.
Neither is very good for you but HFCS is much worse.
French fries used to be made with beef tallow. Now vegetable oil with all the trans-fats. Not good!
Milkshakes are basically 100% artificial with virtually no real dairy product.
Yeah, I stay away from fast food altogether.
I don’t know about that. I looked in the door at city hall, I think they may have a point. There wasn’t a person in there under 300.
“I read a few books on McDonalds. Used to be hamburgers were cooked on spot from fresh meat - usually grass-fed.”
When I moved to SoCal in the 1960s, Carl’s Jr was still local and owned by the family. Char-broiled hamburgers that none have surpassed since, and I’m sure that they were fresh meat rather than frozen. Gone along with the family control.

Can you direct me to a Study, Paper or Book that supports that Hypothesis? (or is it “Settled Science”)
I can support my hypothesis ...

This is easy to understand... even if you are in denial
Daily I take a multi-vitamin, Omega-3 and a Potassium/Magnesium supplement with my meal.
Well the government didn’t tell everyone to eat fast foods almost everyday and the super size them!!!!
Yeah right! You have no idea what insulin even is or what it does and how important it is to our health. My wife is a nurse who taught nutrition for decades. She was also the Northwest Regional Aerobics Dance Instructor Champion when I met her. She was 110 pounds when I met her and she is a 110 pounds today and the best looking woman in her mid 6os that I have ever seen. Somehow she managed to stay slender, active and healthy eating a common sense diet that is very close to the recommendations in the “food pyramid”. Somehow I doubt whether many of the "nutritional experts" here have managed to do the same.
These nonsense fad diets have been coming and going for as long as I can remember always with a bunch of rabid enthusiasts. Fortunately most people have very little real control over themselves and cheat enough that they suffer no permanent damage. But I am old enough to have seen the long term consequences of the zealots who had enough will power to follow these fad diets sometimes all the way to their graves. It is one thing if they are just fat, inactive and have medical issues... that can just be a consequence of getting older.
The thing that I find most sad are the ones who end up with severe cognitive issues. And I have known enough people who have ended up with brains who are severely damaged to recognize what seems to be a pattern. If you deny your brain the nutrients that it needs by cutting out major food groups you most likely will suffer consequences.
The vegetarian craze was the first really detrimental “fad diet” that I became aware of. Basically every person I know who has been a dedicated vegetarian since the 1970s has either died or now has severe cognitive issues. The Atkins craze was the next that I really took notice of. It doesn't seem to take as long for people on Atkins to damage their health, and most of them give it up after a couple years, but the ones I knew who managed to keep going with it are now dead. This Paleo craze is newer, so I do not know what the outcome of that is going to be. It seems to allow a more diverse diet so it is probably not as harmful as being a vegetarian or an Atkins fanatic. If it is keeping one away from highly processed, fast foods, donuts, and candy it is probably beneficial to many. But I seriously doubt that giving up whole grains has any benefit at all.
Forgot to mention the “Keto” diet which is the latest “low carb” craze and currently seems to have the most adherents. Who knows what the consequences will be... I certainly do not feel like being a lab rat. I will say that anytime big business starts taking notice and marketing products night and day and in every grocery store... it is almost a sure sign that most of what is being sold is pure crap meant to maximize profits.
Here is a video for you... it might even make you laugh...
