The ketogenic diet was originally developed almost 100 years ago to treat epilepsy. Nowadays, it is used as a nutrition plan by health-conscious men and women to optimize body composition and athletic performance.

Recent research suggests that high fat, very-low carb diets have another benefit: They may help control glucose, triglycerides, insulin, and body weight in people with diabetes. The research below shows the ketogenic diet may be an effective tool you can use to manage symptoms of Diabetes, alongside exercise and medication.

An excellent and well written article that contains actual data from several studies related to diet and type 2 diabetes.

Recommended reading for anyone on or considering the Keto diet. Also recommended reading for anyone with elevated A1c.

I could have sworn there was an article here in the past few days that talked about how bad the Keto plan was for one’s health. I guess it all depends on who is paying the researchers and scientists, huh...

I’ve read, you could actually reverse type 2 diabetes with keto diet. Keto diet is actually the proper human diet. Sugar is slow poison

Best to eat animals whole. Just hold them up by the tail.

There is no doubt that Keto is controversial. I believe that there are many more articles on "Keto bad" than "Keto good".

I personally discount any article that "recommends consulting with a registered dietitian".

Uhm, yeah! Hello, McFly!
Insulin has one primary function with two purposes; Converting excess blood glucose into fat helps lower the toxicity of the glucose as well as creates an energy store in body fat for any future lack of food.

The former purpose (lowering blood glucose toxicity) is not naturally a common problem for humans in their traditional pre-agrarian diet. The exception primarily being when high sugar fruit plants were available and when ripe. The latter (fat stores) is a condition that used to be highly beneficial to survival. Not it is on the whole a health liability.

People were not meant to pound carbs daily.

Me too. However, I believe the statement is misleading. I plan to post additional articles that discuss this.

May very well be a good thing for people. But here in Southern California, it comes off as just another first-world, indulgent, irritating hipster trend. Like another iPhone app. Oh America: where masculinity, literacy, morals, and genuine occupations of the soul are in short supply... but we are so spoiled we can pick our diets, pick our genders...

Instead of building cathedrals and planning walks to the moon.

“Keto diet is actually the proper human diet. Sugar is slow poison.”

It makes total sense. So many people eat so much processed JUNK, don’t know HOW to cook for themselves or read a label to find all of the ways they sneak sugar and salt into just about everything.

Why, it’s almost as if Big Food and Big Med are working together to keep us fat and medicated! ;)

I personally know a young woman who had Type II, she had a really hard time controlling it even w/insulin. She was able to slowly get off insulin and the other 2 medications she was on. It has been over a year and she is doing well but still sticks mostly to the diet .

My husband started low carb in March. He is not following strict Keto, but his A1C has decreased from 13 to 8, much to the delight of his endocrinologist.

It's just another of many fad diets. It will disappear soon. One study will claim it's all good. The next study will claim it to be death incarnate.

Eat right. Exercise daily. Die anyway!

Agree. I have all 4x my kids in the kitchen and teach them how to cook. It’s a life skill you will truly use your entire life. Anytime you can take fresh ingredients and make a meal, you’re 100% better off than any pre-made processed crap you’ll buy.

And I especially make it a point to my boys, if you learn to cook, and cook well, you’re already 1 BIG step ahead of the pack when it comes to impressing a girl. It sets you apart!

Wow!

Wouldn't it be great if he could drop it below 6.5?

Congrats to your hubby!

I concluded this while in line at a Blaze Pizza which offers a Keto crust...and...i dunno all these perfectly healthy young people requesting it like it were some new flashy item at a store...and one just wonders what it was like in the simple days of fresh baked bread at home in the village and milk straight from the cow, etc...
