Insulin has one primary function with two purposes; Converting excess blood glucose into fat helps lower the toxicity of the glucose as well as creates an energy store in body fat for any future lack of food.
The former purpose (lowering blood glucose toxicity) is not naturally a common problem for humans in their traditional pre-agrarian diet. The exception primarily being when high sugar fruit plants were available and when ripe. The latter (fat stores) is a condition that used to be highly beneficial to survival. Not it is on the whole a health liability.
People were not meant to pound carbs daily.
There were times in my life when I weighed well over 300 pounds. That was when I poured sugar in my coffee, had danish, donuts and cereal for breakfast, deli sandwiches and chips for lunch, and "trimmed" meats for dinner with sides of rice, pasta and potatoes. Yes, I actually trimmed the fat from my meat and thought I was doing the healthy thing!
Now I actively seek the fattiest cuts of meat. I have fried eggs every morning with whole-milk (high fat) yogurt and a few berries mixed in. Lunch is usually a salad with no dressing but topped with cheese, olive oil and generous portion of nuts. Dinner is a meat (fish, chicken, beef, pork) with sides of green veggies like brussels sprouts, broccoli, asparagus or kale, topped with either olive oil or butter.
Also, I now drink red wine instead of beer.
I can always find something to eat wherever I go but these are things I avoid at all costs:
Bread
Pasta
Candy, cookies, ice cream, cake, pies
Any kind of snack food like chips, popcorn, etc
Potatoes (but do have sweet potato once in while)
Everything I do eat has minimal processing and added sugars.
Pretty much works out to the same amount of calories (approx 2500-3000 a day) but now I'm much thinner, more energetic and healthy.

The natural human diet (as just another animal on the planet) is bark and crickets. IE complex carbs protein and fat.
Our metabolism is poisoned by constant intake of simple carbs. Sugar, at least the fructose moiety, is poisonous to our metabolism.
You are absolutely correct.
Sugar, in the wild, is pretty uncommon, except for the fruiting season.
