Urging people to follow low-fat diets and to lower their cholesterol is having disastrous health consequences, a health charity has warned.
In a damning report that accuses major public health bodies of colluding with the food industry, the National Obesity Forum and the Public Health Collaboration call for a major overhaul of current dietary guidelines. They say the focus on low-fat diets is failing to address Britains obesity crisis, while snacking between meals is making people fat.
Instead, they call for a return to whole foods such as meat, fish and dairy, as well as high-fat, healthy foods including avocados, arguing: Eating fat does not make you fat.
The report which has caused a huge backlash among the scientific community also argues that saturated fat does not cause heart disease while full-fat dairy, including milk, yoghurt and cheese, can actually protect the heart.
Processed foods labelled low fat, lite, low cholesterol or proven to lower cholesterol should be avoided at all costs, and people with type 2 diabetes should eat a fat-rich diet rather than one based on carbohydrates...

I’m convinced it killed my mother ,, she was brainwashed by low-fat , no-fat talk by her doctors for 50 years,, pretty sure it caused her dementia being so deficient in fats and cholesterol... her sister who always ate high fat is healthy with no brain dysfunction.
I lost a friend 35 years ago to T2 diabetes and know dozens of people with it today ... of the ones I’ve been able to reach I’ve “cured” 100% (3) people directly ,, my A1C is below 5 , and 2 steps removed I can count people in other countries that have been cured. I just wish my wife would take it seriously... she still buys garbage food for the family.... but I think she’s starting to see the light.
I am convinced eating keto saved my life.

You are not by yourself. I’m approaching 81, and I never had a weight problem, until I got past 56.
Then, I was told to follow the food pyramid and watch my calories and if hungry go for the carbs. I seemed to be dieting all the time and starving for the carbs.
So for about a decade and half, I followed this advice and yoyoed up and down with my weight.
I had a severe foot operation short after I turned 70, and I was not able to walk far or due exercise while standing for about a year. I bloated up to 225 pounds from 180.
Finally, a friend with a similar pathway told me about the Keto diet.
I discussed it with my Primary Care Doc, who inspite of being 60+ was/is the same weight as his basketball days in college. He told me what to buy food wise and not to buy.
His advice was to throw away any processed food and carbs in our kitchem. Then, throw away any so called diet or low cal food.
Only buy food in the outer edges of a grocery store and stay away from any processed food or more than a few ingredients and any ingredients we with more than a couple of sylables.
Eat one small chocolate bar a day for dessert and learn to eat the fresh veggies and get back to walking.
Get back to eating a few eggs (one a day) and never have cereal or toast for breakfast.
He told me wife to have a section of the kitchen counter with fresh fruifit, veggies and almonds and pecans for snacks.
Then, after my first 6-8 weeks on his modified Paleo to go to the Mediterrian diet.
I leveled off at my old weight after the 6-8 weeks, and I have been there for about 3+ years now.
We/I are never hungry with the Med diet and the fresh fruit/veggie/nut snack bar.
My wife’s lab work according to our primary care doc, is like a 30 year old female in training. She is heading into her 80’s.
My last lab tests showed everything normal for a guy in his 40’s not his early 80’s.
Better to do, short, high-intensity workouts.

High Intensity with sufficient rest periods (measured in days) is the best ... look at the natural world ,, gazelles have great speed but basically “idle” through most days ,,, big cats.. enormous speed and energy output followed by long rests... I have puppies now they burn enormous amounts of energy playing and collapse in a heap sleeping...
But even without added exercise getting the diet right will get you 80%+ of the way to your goals.

If you consume a high-fat, low-calorie diet, your body will produce compounds known as ketone bodies as it burns fat. This can trigger metabolic acidosis. Most people would want to avoid this because metabolic acidosis is commonly found in patients with chronic kidney disease. So yeah, Keto diets are hard on the kidneys, which is why they are not meant to be long term solutions for weight loss.
I make my own chocolate treats. I use Hershey’s 100% Cacao Powder, with Swerve Confectionary.
I mix it in with Butter, MCT Oil, Heavy Cream, One Egg, a dash of Vanilla Extract, and toss in frozen bits of Avocado, to make it all nice and cold, mix em all up, and I’ve got the “Mother of all Fat Bombs” with no more than maybe 3 grams of carbs.
Keto is not low-calorie.
You should not consume less than 1700 calories a day on a Keto diet.
The good news, is that it’s the easiest thing to do, since you don’t get all that hungry, especially when you combine Keto with Intermittent Fasting.
The types of food you eat doesn't matter all that much because the best method for losing weight is to burn more calories than you consume. Same as it ever was. Consume more energy than you burn and you'll gain weight. The First Law of Thermodynamics has not been repealed.

Agree, very risky to replace carbs with protein. But since we’re not talking high protein here, not really relevant to this thread.
But still good advice - replace carbs with low fat meats and fish (only), rather than high fat foods, you’re not doing yourself any favors, to say the least. So it is important to keep track of what you’re eating!
Of course. And that still applies to Keto. Keto does not give you Carte Blanche to eat as much as you want. If you eat 5000 calories of fat, guess what? You're going to get fat. The key is, Keto makes it easier to eat a reasonable number of calories.
Grass-Finished meats also, if you can, get your meat from a butcher who gets their beef from local farms, there are much more Omega 3s in grass-finished beef. And take Omega 3 supplements.
So you don't cut calories but lose weight? Is that because you're increasing exercise? If proponents of this diet are claiming that they are not reducing calories, or increasing exercise, but are losing weight, then they're claiming that the First Law of Thermodynamics is no longer valid.

Factually incorrect. Humans are not cars. Hormones affect our fuel efficiency, and what we eat when affects our hormones. This is particularly true once someone gets overweight, since their hormones are often out of whack. Not because of genetics, but because of eating badly while thinking they are doing it right - thanks to the American Heart Association and the USDA.

Also, what many argue is not in favor of “high protein”, but high fat. A serving of 80% lean hamburger, for example, has 23 grams of fat to 19 of protein. Assuming, of course, you don’t follow the USDA and try to drain every last bit of fat out!
It’s a question of the fuel the body uses, it can either use Glucose, or your Fat stores.
For most, the body tries to use Glucose first, then once those glucose stores are depleted, then it must use fat, and convert it into Ketones.
Once you body is fat adapted, it will use the fat stores quicker and become more efficient in using those fat stores for fuel.
However, it is also crucial that you consume certain nutrients to enable that process. That’s why I focus more on nutrients than calories, especially Potassium and Magnesium.

The First Law of Thermodynamics involves a closed system. Your body is not a closed system. Stuff comes in and goes out.
Also, thermodynamics has nothing to do with hunger or cravings, which in turn drive how much we eat. And what.

What he says really only applies to fasting - when you’re essentially a closed system.
