The decision affects roughly a half-dozen PG&E customers, most in Santa Cruz County, who paid electricians to replace the SmartMeters with more traditional, analog models. PG&E cut off their power in a bid to deter others from following suit. At first, the utility insisted it would restore electricity only if those people agreed to let PG&E install another SmartMeter. On Thursday, the company offered a second option, saying customers could also choose a digital meter that lacked a wireless transmitter. But some of the SmartMeter opponents still held out, saying the digital meters contained a power-switching device that produced its own harmful emissions. So on Friday, PG&E said it would restore power to the remaining homes, after first removing the unauthorized analog meters. Those houses will go without electricity and gas meters altogether until the California Public Utilities Commission decides whether to create an opt-out plan for people who don't want the wireless SmartMeters. A commission vote on the issue could come in mid-January.

I don't know where you buy your electronics, but my TV and VCR use infrared remote controls, not RF ones. Cell phones? Different frequency band. (You didn't address switching power supplies in your response.)
We installed remote read water meters in the system I operate. The signal put out by these things is teeny! It’s a meter that’s connected to a small transmitter mounted outside. It can be read by a guy driving down the street. It used to take me 3 days to read the meters, now it takes 3 hours. These signals are so low level, I don’t see how anyone could feel any effects from them. Except hypochondriacs, like my Sister.
How likely is it that someone with a technical background in wireless could ‘spoof’ the signals and produce a false reading to the device ‘reading’ the meters? I’m SURE they have to use a layer of encryption with the system somewhere.
There has apparently developed a not so underground supply of analog power meters people are buying and installing— since they never agreed to have the “smart” meters installed in the first place. The “emissions” claim from wireless is quite clever added complaint to the big brother grid.
Our power supply company (BCH) is in the process of chancing to smart meters, but have not yet got to our house, but I have no objection as it uses very low power and only for a very brief time so I can’t see how it can do much damage, anyway, my TV is a 47” LED flatscreen (LG) and the remote that came with it, and I rarely use a cellphone,
I’m retired and have better things to do with my time than to spend it on the phone, (more fun on freepers)
As it is now, you pay the lowest rate for the base amount of power you use, a higher rate for an amount above the base, and the highest rate for usage above that. With the “Smart Meter” you will pay the lowest rate from 11:00 p.m. to probably 5:00 a.m., a higher rate from 5:00 a.m. to probably 10:00 a.m., and the highest rate from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Your electric bill is about to double or triple.
Your remotes put out RF, neary all electronic equipment does. Try keying them up next to a portable AM radio tuned to about 1000kHz.
Reliant Energy aka Houston Larceny and Power is hell bent for leather installing these things in our area since they got some stupid stimulus grant. I don’t want one and neither do a lot of people around here. The reason has nothing to do with fear of stray radio waves or anything like that. Heck, something is bombarding our area anyway since my radar detector goes off for miles around our town. There are so many rf signals one more doesn’t matter. The reason we don’t want them is the invasion of privacy. As a matter of principal I just don’t think anyone needs to know when I use electricity to the level of detail these things will allow.

My RADAR detector has trains running through the local Kroger. Lots of super-heterodyne action going on.
PG&E Smartmeters are 1 watt output cellular band (electric meters) and about .8 watt for gas meters...they have to transmit to a cell tower or neighborhood receiver (no meter readers or trucks driving around). Probably no health effects, but I am thinking of putting a Faraday Cage around the side to deflect the RF coming into the living area of my home...mostly just to mess with PG&E...they haven’t been the same since AB1890 & the bankruptcy. Management is fully stocked with “greenies’ now.

You might have a point there, but as you know, it is the fear of radiation from the transmitter that has these people up in arms
anyway, I have automatic payment of $65,00 pr month and have had 0 payment the last couple of months due to overpayment so we will see
