What are you doing to prepare?

Posted on 04/02/2010 5:05:17 PM PDT by Indy Pendance

Are you truly independent? Do you have the skills? Can you hunt, grow a garden, can food, sew-knit, live off the land? Are you ready? Do you possess the "lost" skills? Our family is ready. In obama's words, "bring it on". Once the economy collapses, I'll be here longer than the liberals and their pampered lives.

The first rule of being a survivalist is not telling anyone you are a survivalist.

In a broken society, anything goes.....this means whatever is in your house. (and all of the ammo int he world will not hold people at bay forever if conditions are bad enough)

Good to have the supplies—Just in Case. If there is a disaster iy might save your family. Don’t trust the grid to stay up—we may all be in the dark—I have oil lanterns.

"Grow a garden? I imagine there are some people out there with enough land, enough seed stored, enough southern exposure, etc that they could grow a garden and live off it... until about October..."

Depends on where you live. Some of us can garden year-round, and when you know how to freeze, can and dehydrate the stuff, you eat year-round regardless.

I’m a firm believer in the barter system. I have access to 3200 gallons of gasoline. I am sure I can barter what we need. Have 3-1000 watt Honda generators. Can run Freezer, fridge, and pellet stove. Can pull the propane and have 2-100# tanks for the Weber gas grill. Battery and solar power the radio station and night lights. Have an old shotgun and a couple of PPKs’s to keep the bad guys away for a bit. The lot is wired for video and I have one hanging off a rotating antenna that see’s 360 degreez.

BTW I was born in Beech Grove :)

Who do you want inhabiting this country, people like me, or uneducated boobs? There are tons of us ‘out there in fly-over’ that will survive perfectly fine when the government goes bust. And, we’re normal Americans, military families. We’ll be there, we’re home-schooling, we’ve raised conservative kids. There are more of us than them. That’s why they’re lashing out against the tea-party. The libs are scared fecal-less. And talk radio is in a boom. Deep down, libs know we’re right, and they can’t convince the rest of the country to their point of view. Americans are Americans, we’re not Europeans, we fled that. We fought King George, we will BEAT king bambi. Isn’t it kind of fun to be on the winning side of LIBERTY! I’m so ready to ‘bring it on’, liberty vs tyranny.

No matter what, liberty will win.

Having had the (good) fortune to live without regular indoor plumbing for quite a few years of my life, the idea of pooping in plastic bags is a horror show.

What on earth will anyone do with bags filled with crap? Any idea how heavy they will be? One little hole in them (and that is a given) will be ultra disgusting.

Composting toilets can be clean, non-smelling, and can be rigged up to compost even with a small city lot. I’ve seen it in action. The book “Humanure” is online - I have a hardcopy - and the best info on making composting toilets I’ve ever seen.

I’ve done bucket composting, barrel composting, trench latrines, outhouses - if anyone wants more info ask and I’ll get back to the thread later.

Poop also burns very well in a woodstove. It’s surprisingly good fuel.

The depression nearly drove the dear and turkey population to extinction in Georgia. You are right. Once the markets break down - and possibly manufactured famines "to control" and "to reduce" the population like what historically has happened in other socialist/progressive/communist nations, then the wildlife will take a beating along with a lot of us humans.

< sarcasm >Thank you Democrats. < /sarcasm>

Well, I agree some are. No details needed, but I’m pretty stocked myself.

But I’d bet ya dollars to donuts there are folks who buy some seed packs at Home Depot thinking they’re ready - until they realize they don’t even own a shovel...

UknowwhutImean!!!

Many will send you to high cost prep stuff.

Good place used to be survivalblog.com but lately I’ve gone to “survival retreat”. Not exactly sure of the url but I think if you type that in, it should get you close. If not, FRmail me and I’ll give you a link. I’ve found out so much information from people who actually lived this lifestyle. They aren’t into crazy stuff, just good old fashioned living off the land stuff.

For all of the people who say they are prepared....are you? In any trueemergency/disaster situation, the hospitals will most likely be overflowing, and you will probably need to perform your own triage. DO you have hemostats, sutures, tourniquets, splints?

When disaster hits, you will not be able to count on ANY part of the current infrastructure to help you.

I have a saying I printed out an placed with my stored items:

The veneer of civilization is thin......and getting thinner.

seed packs at Home Depot thinking they’re ready

yeah, the seeds thing is stupid. I despise that commericial about non hyprid seeds. Talk about trying to profiteer out of scaring folks.

1). why non-hybrid????? Shouldn't you try to get the most hardy hybrid seeds for post apocolypse?

2). Why not just buy a bunch of already grown stuff like wheat or MREs and canned food? When bad times happen, are you going to have time to grow stuff before dying of starvation???

That said, I found a can of this stuff in my closet where my wife had tucked it away. I think I might plant it come spring and can the food.
