canning supplies that can heat up over flames and not depend on electricity. Also, don’t forget the jars, lids....all the stuff that goes with canning and preserving.

What are you doing to prepare?

I purchased Lifelock, saved $15 on my auto insurance, and canceled my AARP membership.

Lol!

Hey, I clicked on a Census link and it took me to a site with a map.

There are currently somewhere between 650-1100 people per square mile where I live.

If the SHTF, I’m inclined to think fairly soon that number would go down to the 40-50 range. Max.

Truly frightening.

I really like this site, they're not over the top wackos, just 'normal' folks. I hear you, I'm in my early 50's. This stuff is scaring the crap out of me.

American Preppers Lot's of good info, tons of links. How to can, hunt, garden, water, all sorts of useful information, it's not a "I've got 50,000 rounds of ammo, come and get me" site. Normal people giving practical advice.

I was seriously thinking about buying a STEAM ENGINE!!!

Seriously!

Hook it up to a heavy duty car alternator, have a nice little 1000 watt inverter, and you’d be good to go!

I got pleanty of DVD’s and a handcrank that my younger cousins can use to keep my big screen plasma HDTV on so I can watch my favorite shows...

Anything else I divulge would be detrimental to our compounds security and discrete location and existance...

If you know the password, we may be amiable to visitors...;-)

Stocking on ammo, food and medicine. I can cook from scratch bread and most foods. We have a garden that I can various foods and this past weekend bought half dozen fruit bearing trees. We also hunt on our land and have a pond for fishing bass and catfish.

My grandparents were very very poor and my grandmother made sure I learned how to cook from scratch. I mean EVERYTHING from scratch. Not that I do all the time, I mean I love to open some pasta and I certainly buy loaves of bread and all, but I do know how.

Oh, and we don’t have any chickens right now, but we do have a coop and neighbors have a ton of chickens we can get chicks from if needed.

Oh, and we dug a smoker pit in the yard for smoking wild turkeys, wild boar meat and rabbits.

Absolutely. Also, be sure to check the shelf life of your canned items. Back in 1999, I made the rounds - DelMonte is my pick with a 10 year shelf life. Ever since the year 2000, I have been rotating groceries. I buy 20 cans a month for the emergency supplies.

....and, don’t forget a toilet seat!n To some this may seem insignificant, but it will be a welcome asset to your supplies. You can put it on top of a 5 gal bucket (with a plastic bag inside), over a milk crate, or purchase one of the “chair type” toilet seats from a medical supply store.

As well as lots of toothpaste, shampoo, soap, detergent (even if you have to wash clothes outside), dish soap, & tons of batteries.

I just listened to a book on CD called Patriots by some guy names Rawles. It was basically a survivalist manual in the form of a novel. Very compelling and some decent advice.

One of the benefits of living out in the country. They can laugh and call us rednecks but we won’t go hungry.
