Can you imagine the chaos that would ensue if our staid and unimaginative government workers got a dose of caffeine? Efficiency and energy in that environment would be like sunlight on vampires.

You may have slurred some government workers. Granted this was many decades ago but I worked with some NASA researchers who were hard-working folks. I still remember the gloom with which one of them (always gloomy in his pronouncements) told me that NASA had just passed a notable milestone -- they now had fully one bureaucrat for each scientist.

And I have to say I haven't seen lots of progress beyond that point. They still had some details to wrap up before the Shuttle started flying, but compared to the huge advances in the preceding decade.. not much.

And the Shuttle was not intended to fly this long. But the successor(s) died on the drawing board.

Today I work a little with other government researchers (at NIST); they may be saddled with federal rules, but the ones I know are dedicated to their work.

Then again, all the foregoing deals with researchers / scientists and not service-workers.

Yes, we have all sorts of spring flowers.

The first daffodil bloomed today so I picked it and took it to work. It is a rather ragged looking thing but it is a reminder that spring is almost here

There was a Tea Party in Monroe, the county seat, according to an email I got from the county Republicans, but we didn’t have the time free. It’s Spring Break for the county schools, so maybe they got some turnout from the students; we had some volunteers at the polls who were high school students. I’m hoping the party will send out a report tomorrow.

It's VERY cultural. And I concur with the "value the women" aspect of that culture. It may be old-fashioned today, but I'm not letting go.

And I'm no longer cursed (though to tell the truth I never was, but I've heard reports...) for holding a door for a woman behind me. That's just how I was raised. Men and women are not the same, never were and likely never will be, and pretenses to the contrary are simply destructive of our institutions.
