Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? Its an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training
Ive been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe thats why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

It’s called vermicompost, a term you can use to search the web.
Can you post the link for us? Thanks!
Well. Cantaloupe preserves is good. All done now. I actually did write this down as I went along. I will use it in the future for some honeydew also just to test it out again.
You know some days are just right. I used the flesh of one cantaloupe minus a tiny bit Lloyd ate for supper one night. Added sugar just enough to cover in the pan. Didn’t measure nothin’. And I got EXACTLY 4 half pints. Could NOT have purposely done that if I wanted to.
Oops I think DelaWhere is a man. I kept thinking of the old joke, If Mississippi bought Missouri a New Jersey, what would Delaware?” “Idaho, Alaska.” :P

Lodge Outdoor Recipes
Camp Chili
Chili is great for parties-whether its cool outside or not. You can always freeze leftovers in various sized bags to pop in a microwave oven for a quick meal. Coarsely chopping your own steak makes a heartier chili; you can always substitute hamburger meat.
7 to 8 pounds round steak, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 pound thick-sliced bacon, chopped
4 cups diced onions
¼ cup flour
2 tablespoons kosher or sea salt
1 tablespoon freshly ground black pepper
8 cloves garlic, crushed
4 large tomatoes, chopped
2 tablespoons ground cumin
2 tablespoons paprika
8 poblano peppers, roasted, peeled and chopped
4 cups beef stock
1. Brown bacon in large cast iron dutch oven over medium heat. Add onions before bacon is done and continue browning until onions are soft. Dip bacon and onions out.
2. Dredge meat in flour, salt and pepper. Place in Dutch oven, stirring continuously until beef is browned. Return cooked bacon and onions to pan; add garlic. Stir and brown 2 to 3 minutes.
3. Add ground cumin, paprika, peppers, tomatoes, beef stock and enough water to cover completely. Bring to a boil. Cover and simmer from 2 ½ hours or until tender, stirring occasionally, adding a little water as needed.

You’ll be sending us all some yummy cantaloupe preserves now, right? mmmmmmmmmmmmm
Thank you. That will be going into my survival folder.

No no no.... it goes What did Delaware - She wore her brand New Jersey... LOL
Whenever people would ask where I was from and I would tell them Delaware, they almost universally came back with - Where’s that? or Oh, that’s up there in New England isn’t it?
So I kinda short circuited the thing and used DelaWhere - But, now I get Hi Dela... Can’t win... LOL
Everyone should read your homepage. A lot to think about there.
What books have you published? I’m a writer and would be very interested in seeing your work. It appears you don’t like to brag. Thanks.
A few of us know where it is, just east of Maryland, northeast of Virginia. It’s a very pretty place. I drove through Maryland one time from Arlington VA in September. I lived in Phoenix at the time, and it was delightful to see the lush green farms and hills. Gorgeous!
We have the same “where in the world is...” syndrome here in Fresno. SoCal people say, “Isn’t that in northern California, near the Bay Area?” LOL. Look at a map sometime!
Well, I got some of it right... I had to check and it is:
What Did Delaware, Boys?
Suggested by Bill McGinnis
Oh, what did Delaware, boys? Oh, what did Delaware?
Oh, what did Delaware, boys? Oh, what did Delaware?
Oh, what did Delaware, boys? Oh, what did Delaware?
I ask you now as a personal friend, what did Delaware?
She wore her New Jersey, boys. She wore her New Jersey.
She wore her New Jersey, boys. She wore her New Jersey.
She wore her New Jersey, boys. She wore her New Jersey.
I tell you now as a personal friend, she wore her New Jersey.
Other verse pairs include:
Oh, what does Iowa? She weighs a Washington.
Oh, what does Idaho? She hoes her Maryland.
Oh, what does Tennessee? She sees what Arkansas.
Oh, where has Oregon? She’s gone to Oklahoma.
Oh, what did Massa-chew? She chewed her Connecti-cud.
Oh, how did Flori-die? She died in Missouri.
Here’s a second version of the song, which appears to go to a
different tune than the song above.
What did Delaware, boys?
What did Delaware?
What did Delaware, boys?
What did Delaware?
She wore a brand New Jersey,
She wore a brand New Jersey,
She wore a brand New Jersey,
That’s what she did wear.
Why did Cali-phone ya,
Why did Cali-phone?
Why did Cali-phone ya,
Was she all alone?
She phoned to say “Hawaii”
She phoned to say (”How-ah-yee”)
She phoned to say “Hawaii”
That’s why she did phone.
Where has Oregon, boys,
Where has Oregon?
If you want Alaska,
(I’ll-ask-a) where she’s gone.
She went to pay her Texas
She went to pay her Texas
She went to pay her Texas,
That’s where she has gone.
What did Mississip, boys,
What did Mississip?
What did Mississip, boys,
Through her pretty lips?
She sipped a Minna-soda,
She sipped a Minna-soda,
She sipped a Minna-soda,
That’s what she did sip.
How did Wiscon-sin, boys?
She stole a New-brass-key,
Too bad that Arkan-saw, boys,
And so did Tenna-see.
It made poor Flori-die, boys,
It made poor Flori-die, you see,
She died in Missouri, boys,
She died in Missouri!

Why we must prepare.
ROFL!!!
The “Idaho, Alaska” is an old joke in my family. We always laugh at it.
I hope you got to see the Soouthern 2/3 of the State... wouldn’t give you a plug nickle for anything North of the Chesapeake Delaware Canal.
The one think that gives me reassurance (if TSHTF) for this area is that there are 6 bridges to control and you control land access to just about the whole peninsula - Delmarva (Delaware/Maryland/Virginia) at the widest 60 miles wide and 200 miles long. Also known as ‘The Land of Pleasant Living’. Now if we could just keep those trickle infiltration people from coming in here and ruining things. (grin)
Only real drawback is only 25’ above sea level and we are downwind of Disney Land East - (otherwise called DC)
