Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? Its an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training
Ive been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe thats why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood
Thanks for the link. I see most of them are the newer models, no feet, rounded lid. But the camp models have the lids with lips. You can also buy just the lipped lids. (Say that 10 times LOL) I wonder if those would fit on the frying pans as well.
I have an ancestor who settled the town of Guilford Connecticut in 1639. His name was John Parmelee (he signed the compact to commit to stay in Guilford as John Parmelin).
Could you add me to the ping list? I just bought another copy of his book (loaned the last one to family members). Trying to get hubby to give it a look over, then will donate it to our church library.
Yes Marmolade, happy to do so:
Yet another Dave Ramsey ping request!
Food prices went up with the fuel costs and have never gone down - at least where I live.
djf is right. We’re not talking about another Great Depression. If the banks shut down, and they are in very serious trouble right now, and the dollar goes worthless it could be total anarchy.
Don’t get caught up in martial law fantasies. Take a million troops and spread them across the country. That’s 20K per state. Here in Iowa we have 99 counties. That’s 200 troops for each and my county is considered relatively rural and we still have a 40K population. The numbers say the govt is not going to be able to keep order for very long if it all flies apart.
I don’t know if even state and local govts can survive. There’s no way of knowing how things are going to go down, but if you want to survive you better think things through and have contingencies. You will likely have to make some very heart wrenching decisions.
LOL, I love it when you talk ‘Texan’.
I have a jar of cantelope jelly in the cabinet now that I bought at the Mennonites. Maybe I need to make some biscuits to make sure its okay. hmmmm ;-)
All great links, thanks for the info.
I don’t know about that dehydrator [it has no customer reviews] but I found a cheap one at your link further down. It has almost all 5 stars. Lately I don’t buy anything without customer reviews.
Thanks!
It is kind of neat to visit those towns named after our forefathers. Have visited Hollis, Maine and Hollis, Oklahoma both.
A few years ago (well guess it was about 9 or 10 now) I organized a family reunion at St. Mary’s City (where they landed) - They have quite a place with reenactments and all.
Fascinating to see where John Hollis hauled a guy named Brothers into court for calling his wife (Restituta) a whore. Made him apologize to the court and the whole community.
Another time John was chastised by the court for trading with the Indians. Same tribe (Nanticokes) who in the 1970’s made my father Honorary Chief Warhorse for taking on the State government (and winning) against a mercantile tax.
Then about 10 years after my father died, I had a visit by an old pickup driven by a young fellow with an ancient passenger who introduced himself and told me that I needed to really take my heritage seriously - It might have just been an honorary thing to some, but it meant that I had a heritage to live up to as the Son of War Horse. Guess I’m trying...
I’ve recently discovered that you can use a word for your own keyword on the sidebar. I use wcgnascarthread only because we all save our threads over there that way. I accidently did something that made them all appear in my sidebar to the right where the extended news etc. usually is. They are still there only below all my threads that I have keyworded. So, it’s really easy to find the threads I like to follow. :) I hope that made sense.
Hey thanks for posting the cheese making recipes. I wanna try that soon.
Also California just discovered some asian fruit tree disease which has already affected Florida. I posted it on the old thread. The cost of citrus juics etc. will be going up higher than it already is.
Milk, butter, bread etc. are still as hight as they were when fuel prices went up.
They might fit. I would think a 10” lid would also fit a 10” skillet. You might email the company and ask. All of the really old dutch ovens had the three feet and the lipped lid. Most of the new ones don’t. Mine has a slightly lipped lid but it’s not as deep as the old ones. The camp style would work for anything. I prefer mine not to have feet though in case I want to use it on top of the regular stove or in the oven.
I like to make beef stew or pinto beans in mine on top of the wood stove. Yum!
A lot of your older dutch ovens are still in good condition because they haven’t had a lot of salt pork and stuff cooked in them the way the old skillets have. Salt and cast iron aren’t good together. You really have to keep the cast iron cleaned and seasoned if you cook heavily salted food in them.
Browse through thrift stores. You'll find things like that there from time to time. It'll be worth your effort to look!
The purpose for the lipped edge on the old dutch ovens was to pile embers on - with the rounded top the embers would all fall off. If you want to use it as a real old fashioned oven as it was intended, you need the lip.
Good evening fellow Texan :)
It took me two hours to catch up here. LOL A lot of great info. We did get some rain it was extremely wet outside this morning but now we’re back on fire weather watch already. :(
You have spoken my thoughts here. As conservatives we often talk of those on welfare having a mentality of being entitled to everything. When we get this new class of poor coming to our places looking for food it will make the current welfare recipients look tame. They won't just want food. They will want all you have.
I have been very busy around the house today but have read your previous posts also. I agree and live by what you say, but we are going have to make the choice to defend our families here. That's just all there is to it. Bless you FRiend.
