Angry programmers riot, shouting 'Death to India'
The Daily Redundancy ^

Posted on 03/14/2008 11:46:02 AM PDT by chordmaster

SAN JOSE, CA (TDR) - Hundreds of angry programmers took to the streets burning Indian flags, and chanting anti-Indian slogans after Wednesday morning production meetings. The protesters - mostly young males - have reached a boiling point after years of technological imperialism and failed Indian programming policies. Busy midday traffic came to a halt as this once proud high-tech mecca was transformed into raging, socially-challenged powder keg of humanity...

On the right rear of every M1 Abrams tank, you will see a little tube sticking up.

We were asked by the U.S. Army to invent a method of measuring the wind speed and direction, with no moving parts.

The three of us invented that instrument!

That is what I have done for the last 35 years as a software engineer. I make things happen, even if nobody will ever know my name.

Except, here I was talking about tech support, where the "English" name is a pseudonym used in an attempt to fool me into thinking that I'm dealing with someone who
a) shares my culture
b) has a clue
c) gives a flying leap.

I have to deal a lot with other cultures. If people want to get mad, call names, insult folks, and otherwise behave like a boor (term from the British slur on Dutch-descended Boers) go ahead. I'll be the one to inform them that not all of us Anglophones are jerk-ass idiots -- and I'll gain lots of extra points for being one who makes the effort to connect.

I don't like dealing with Indian tech-support anymore than anyone else. I find their English surprisingly hard to understand (and frequent, even in-country, exposure has not helped as much as I hoped), but I quite disagree with this presupposition of dishonesty regarding the presented names.

Americans are really casual regarding names; other cultures are not so.

Respond to them however you wish; the more arrogantly you behave the more you float my boat.

We figured out a way of heating four wires (North, East, South, West) and kept them at a constant temperature.

We would regulate the current of each wire and measure how it changed as the wind blew over the wires.

My software used the measured current to each wire to figure out the wind direction and speed.

That information was then supplied to the targeting computer of the M1 tank to increase their first round hit accuracy.

Care to hear what I did for Lockheed Martin?

Radar Air Traffic Controllers in the U.S. sit around their radar screens and often have no idea about the weather. I was tasked to decode weather information and display it as the background on the radar screens.

Today, aircraft can be diverted around a serious thunderstorm, because ATC can see the storms on their radar screen.

I MAKE THINGS WORK!

Best I can figure out is stands for Model-view-controller. Basically a new way of developing apps. Basically figuring out what it's going to look like, where the info is coming from and how to get the info into it. Not rocket science or even anything new.

Reminds me of the old days, when I was told by a snotty young instructor that I would not understand relational database because I had never worked with them. I explained to him that instead of the database telling me what the relationship is, I actually had to hand code those relationships, so I certainly understand how they work.

Same thing happened with me. I was not hired because I did not understand how to use a relational database?

Good God, I could creat my own software to do that simple task!

But, the stupid people only asked if I knew how to use thier specific relational database.

Funny... but I have met a American engineering grad student from this premium “first world” who doesnt know how to differentiate or integrate a simple sinusoidal function.

When I was surprised about it, he said he knew what it was, but he didnt need to remember it. Obviously its not important to remember d/dx(cos x) = -sinx, and still this guy gets into grad school, and is in good shape to graduate with a “thesis” ! Scariest thing was he was majoring in electrical Engineering specializing in DSP (digital signal processing)!!

Some of my friends at IIT-Bombay were infinitely smarter than the grad students I met here.. and some of them couldn’t afford to go for higher studies either in US or India and ended up working in the software industry. Good thing is, they are probably going to bring the average IQ of the places they join by at least a few standard deviations higher.

On an average, I dont think most Americans or Indians are smarter.. infact, the average IQ of the entire planet is dropping down and people are becoming dumber and dumber as time goes by.. people are the same everywhere, its just that Indian students are pushed harder in science and math.

Ok, I am totally stumped as to how that formula would increase the profits of my company.

This is exactly the attitude that I have been fighting against for the last 35 years.

I do not give a darn what you did in college, but what can you achieve today!

No problem with that statement. Ask them if they have ever analyzed the climate data themselves.

Those that have looked at the actual data are horrified. Those that only listen to what they are told, believe.

That alone, is one outstanding test.

Concepts are everything in physics-intensive subjects, esp in DSP, circuit design.

In programming, you need clarity of thought and logical thinking. But AFAIK and I could be wrong since this is not my field, you guys dont need to understand a lot of concepts in physics and math.

Its a bit surprising that a person who specializes in DSP, a field that deals with evaluation of communication signals, doesnt know such a basic equation about the core signal studied in his field.

Of course, any TI calculator would tell him what is differntial of Cosx but thats beside the point.. point is, would you trust someone to be a good engineer who doesnt know basic concepts.. what if there is an aerospace engineer who cannot distinguish centripetal from centrifugal force or doesnt even know : F=m*a ?

Even if they make good engineers based on their long practical experience, how will they do any research or invent new products if their conceptual knowledge itself is weak ?

Actually, you made some good points.

At WSMR, we hire a young electrical engineer that did not know Ohms law.

That was my first warning that this guy who obtained a college degree in Mexico, was not exactly being honest

He was soon fired for being an illegal.

Yes, some basics are required.

As for your equation, that is not a valid example.

So, I asked if the chemistry or biology departments of the school could spare 1 ml of this chemical. They could supervise their students using a pipette, as they introduced 0.3 ml of lactic acid into my prepared vials.

Lactic Acid?!?! Who do you think you are, Timothy Leary?!?!?!

I got a lecture about illegal drugs and how they could never supply chemicals to anyone.

I wish I could say, "I'm shocked," but I'm really not. It's depressing, actually.

Manager == "That's *it* ? This doesn't look too hard. In fact, this could have been done in half the time by the offshore resources."

You've been talking to my manager, haven't you?

"Hey Mark, I need you to set up a VPN tunnel. I know you haven't done it before, but all you need to do is use the config off of this other router, and just change the IP addresses..." 10 days later, I finally got it to work, even after a Cisco CCIE had said, "Well, it should be working!"

My manager thought it would be a 1 to 2 hour job. Instead, I wound up putting nearly 70 hours into the project.

Old programmers never die, they just branch to a new address.

Would that be a BALR? (OK, so that was OS360 JCL, but what the heck...)

BALR would assume that you'd be returning via the linkage register... :-)

I was thinking in terms of BC 15,new_address
