Cold, breezy.
No winds as strong as yesterday thankfully.
Tree came down and blocked the road late yesterday, the fire department then went to cut it up.
Their chainsaw was too small.
They had to wait for 'rescue' by the road department.
Lincoln and the North entered the war to preserve the Union rather than to free the slaves, but within a relatively short time emancipation became an accepted war aim. Neither Congress nor the president knew exactly what constitutional powers they had in this area; according to the Dred Scott decision, they had none. But Lincoln believed that the Constitution gave the Union whatever powers it needed to preserve itself, and that he, as commander-in-chief, had the authority to use those powers.
In the fall of 1862, after the Union army victory at Antietam, Lincoln issued a preliminary proclamation, warning that on January 1, 1863, he would free all the slaves in those states still in rebellion. Intended as a war and propaganda measure, the Emancipation Proclamation had far more symbolic than real impact, because the federal government had no means to enforce it at the time. But the document clearly and irrevocably notified the South and the world that the war was being fought not just to preserve the Union, but to put an end to the peculiar institution. Eventually, as Union armies occupied more and more southern territory, the Proclamation turned into reality, as thousands of slaves were set free by the advancing federal troops.
Happy Mars landing day to you too, Amy!
Happy Birthday Jen!
Very interesting.
Happy FR Anniversary, SpookBrat!
Hi Amy.
Hi Vic.
Hey Mayor, created any handiwork masterpieces lately?
I gotta scoot to an appointment but if I be back a little later. Have a great day all.
Thank you for the lovely card Amy!!! I'm having a great day. I had lunch with a couple former co-workers and got some presents. Hubby agreed to go to the FReeper ball and I bought the tickets this morning. :-)
I am so excited! I just got home from the grocery store (no not about that...) and checked the mail and there was this envelope addressed to me from President and Mrs Bush with a White House seal on it!!! I thought, how did President Bush know it's my birthday??? What a great guy!! Well... it's not a birthday card, but it IS a Christmas card!!! The first one I've ever received from the President. Wow! (So glad I donated to his campaign! hehehe)
Hey! If it's my FR birthday, that means it's Jen's birthday in real life. She's getting old. hahaha
Happy Birthday Jen!
WHAT??? No, I'm not!!! I'm only 39 (again...). ;-)
Happy FR Anniversary Spookie! Can't wait to see you and the munchkins in DC!
Hey, everybody ! Happy Thursday!![]()
Have a cup while you Freep !
Running late today. My wife had borrowed a cell phone from a friend and liked it so well that, well, bet you can guess? That's right. We went to Cingular Wireless today and got her one now. I think we did okay. $39.99/month for 450 daytime minutes and 5000 night/weekend minutes for their nationwide service.
We got the same phone as the one she was using only it's newer/upgraded, so she knows how to use it.
Now I need to play with it and figure it out, haha! I've never had one of these contraptions before. I'll check out the book. It's easy, I bet.
Sadly, a trip to D.C. is not within the ability of my budget this year. But I wish all of you a wonderful celebration!
Hey K-man!! Thanks for popping in on my birthday.
Thank you so much. I've had a wonderful day! :)
Thank you so much! This has been a terrific birthday.
: )
My pleasure. Nitey night. :-)
