We're pretty lucky here in the boonies - it's pretty live and let live. I mean I walk into the local corner mart and the gals behind the counter are all smoking!!!

Of course Virginia is a tobacco state.

OTOH the Governor wants to raise the 2 and a half cents per pack tax to 25 cents and let towns and counties add up to another 50 cents.

Of course all the usual suspcts are coming out of the wals about it. There was even a blurb about it on Fox News Live the last half hour.

That teen smoking is thing is the standard pap out of the lung association. The Virginia House of Delegates killed 3 or 4 different tax increase proposals last year. And this one is even higher than any of those proposals.

My Delegate is a Democrat and even he says he can't support that big of an increase. (I've had lots of talks with him, he's my attorney). The border counties by Maryland aren't going to go along with too much of an increase either because they would lose too much business and revenue. When the out of staters stop crossing the border.

I live 8 miles from the Maryland line and on just that one stretch of road their are 7 discount cigarette places, and the parking lots are always full of out of state tags.

I'm fairly close to Kentucky who has some fairly cheap taxes. They passed a law here to confiscate your car if you're caught bringing over $60.00 worth across the state line. The insane b*st*rds have gone over the edge.
