Ancient Assyrian tablets, dictating social arrangements including women's rights, dating back to 4,000 years have been excavated in the Central Anatolian province of Kayseri, a local newspaper reported Thursday.
Prof. Fikri Kulakoglu of Ankara University told Dogan News Agency that the Kultepe-Kanis-Karum trade colony site where the tablets were unearthed was remarkable.
He said the tablets revealed detailed information about the Assyrians, spanning from commercial trade to the nitty-gritty of the local social life.
"From women's rights to the adoption of children and marriages arranged at birth, the tablets include all kinds of civilizational and social data from Anatolia 4,000 years ago," he said.
He added: "There is also an emotional letter from a woman to her husband and a letter from another woman who complains about her mother-in-law. You can't find such things in an empire's official archive."
However, most of the 23,500 cuneiform tablets found were about commerce.
"Kultepe is where the Anatolian enlightenment began. The people in this area were literate much earlier than other places in Anatolia, including its west," he said.
Kinda funny they were more civilized 4,000 years ago than they were 1,200 years ago in the same area....
Rights for women - 4000 years ago. Like
the right to a 5 minute rest between beatings.

Well islam did shorten the rest period to 1-2 minutes tops...
Iran and Egypt in the 50’s were more civilized than today too
"Kultepe is where the Anatolian enlightenment began. The people in this area were literate much earlier than other places in Anatolia, including its west," he said.
I would say the trade, the literacy and the enlightenment are all related.
A trader of necessity must be literate to function. He must be able to keep books and read contracts. He also probably speaks several languages.
If he is a truly successful trader he has probably had many interactions with high government officials and or royalty. He likely thinks of himself as a peer to these government official on an intellectual level.
Once you have lost your awe of these bureaucrats and see them as people you begin to think why are they lord over me when they are not any better than me or in many cases not at my level of intelligence
Once these ideas begin to float around in your mind you may begin to voice these ideas over dinner with friends. Those friends may begin to think about them and so begins a revolution.

All that Saudi Arabian money flowing like a river from those backwards ass inbred Bedouin savages really can pay for a helluva lot of social regression and indoctrination world wide....
You used to post quite a bit from this source. They formed a Christian military group separate from the commie Kurds but with them. What’s going on with them do you know ?
Thanks
behold the power of malsi
very backwards
I did? Man, I’ve got Oldtimer’s disease. As to the military thing, I haven’t heard a peep. Sorry.
A clerk/scribe back then was highly prized and well paid, especially a multilingual one, as you noted. Have you read the late Louis L’Amour’s “The Walking Drum” by any chance?
No, wasn.t he a western writer?
In the Bloggers & Personal forum, on a thread titled Archaeologists Find Assyrian Tablets in Turkey, Some About Women’s Rights, 2ndDivisionVet;
Responding to My comment about using Assryian news sources which I tried to pull up and place here was actually a complement and never intended as a criticism but an encouramgement to do so.

Geeze... Sorry you took offence to it. Because I thought you were the one of the very few among the many posting here that were covering them .
“From women’s rights...marriages arranged at birth,”
I find this rather disturbing. If I was to say I’m for women”s rights and added arranged marriages from birth in the same sentence, I’ll bet some feminist would want to dropkick me in the plums.
Women’s rights....Their statement means nothing without specifics....
I assume they were writing about just a man and woman, so ignorant of real progress./s/
Anything about gay rights on those tablets? If not, how backwards they are... /s
Thanks 2ndDivisionVet.
Gee, giving some specific examples would have been nice. What rights? What would an Assyrian lady say in a hot letter to her husband?
