Afternoon all...I just go up a short while ago....somehow I have not been sleeping well at nite, these past few days, with BigDom gone to Florida, so last night, I guess I just crashed finally, and made up for all my lost sleep last nite...

Grannie, as usual, your pics are stunning...

Westy, you were surely a hunky type guy in that pic....

I have lots of pics of my dad, looking somewhat similar...he was a mechanic, and I guess you would call him the navigator, on the planes that flew out from Hamilton Airforce Base, near San Rafael California, during WW11....he was on those planes that flew into the Pacific Theatre, bringing in supplies, and picking up the wounded...said it was scarey stuff at times...

But I have a lot of his pics from WW11, and there he is with lots of his army buddies, almost in the same position, and wearing the same sort of clothing as you fellas are wearing...and leaning up against their planes...

Well, BigDom is nearing the end of his first week down in Florida....in the next few days, his uncle will take him back to the airport, near Tampa, and then BigDoms friend who lives elsewhere in Florida, will drive to the airport and get BigDom for a week with him....

I assume he is having a fine time, and all is well, as I have not heard from him, and I told him to call, only if something bad happens...so no phone calls, is good news..

And the ebay shopping continues....

I was stationed at Hamilton Field for awhile after the war. It was still an Air Corp Base at that time...Had been built before the war and had permanant buildings, not tar paper shacks like the ones that were built during the war....

Me, I always end up having to wrestle said dogs because for some strange reason I signal 'playtime' to dogs.
It's like they see me and decide that I'm a fun guy.
It's horrible when you look down at a dog and he's simpering at you and looking up at you pathetically.

When my dad was stationed at Hamilton, my mom came out to live with him there, and they lived in San Rafael...a woman in San Rafael, had a large home, and she rented out rooms to military couples, and that is where my mom and dad lived...

Its some distance from San Rafael to Hamilton, and there used to be a special bus, that came from Hamilton, and picked up all the military personnel in the surrounding areas, and took them to the base...

Mom got pregnant with me out there in San Rafael, and then dad got transfered overseas...so mom, six months pregnant, decided to go back to Chicago where her family was, have me, and wait out the war, and wait for dad to return....

Military men made so little money in those days and mom and dad barely were able to scrape together enough money to buy mom a train ticket back to Chicago...but she needed to out of San Francisco, ,and they did not have money enough to get her there...so a military bus came and got her and took her to San Francisco....

My first time visiting California from Chicago, we were going down to San Francisco, and dad and mom decided we should stop off in San Rafael, and I could see where I started out, where I was conceived...they found the street sure enough, and found the two big palm trees which had been out front of this boarding house...but the house was no longer there...it had been torn down, and in its place was a big motel, with a pool...mom and dad were sure disappointed, as, altho, ,times in that little room were financially strapped, and war was going full tilt, and dad was often in danger, still that little room, was lived in by a newly married couple, who found much happiness, not in worldly things, but in love, and just being with each other, knowing that dad was often in danger and could lose his life...I am the result of that love and happiness....and grateful to my parents, who were not afraid to take the plunge and get married, and have a family, in spite of the horrific war going on and the future as yet undecided...

Nitey nite all...see ya tomorrow...

Something about that reminded me about this guy who was scuba diving with Sperm Whales.
He got too close to one, started scratching it with his fingers, and it rubbed against him like a huge cat.
(It had come closer to stare at the funny looking thing with fins.)

My inlaws were stationed at Hamilton immediately after the war; housing was still in short supply and they had to scramble around until base housing became available.

Their first base as a couple, was here in Kearney Nebraska where a lady rented them her basement because of the lack of base housing. They too considered this some of the happiest times of their lives even though they were as poor as church mice at the time.

You might recognize the guy on the right front as Captain Clark Gable.

Cheers all.

Isnt this something....my parents, during WW11, Loddys inlaws, after the war, and Westy himself, after the war, all stationed at Hamilton, so many, many years ago...and yet here we all are, talking about them, and that time, together...the internet and the world wide web, sure are something arent they...making the world smaller, linking people up to those they might never have met in real life, and finding common ground....

I think, in general, that young couples, of my parents and my generations, took the plunge and got married and started families, without big financial backing...in fact, living from paycheck to paycheck, and being just barely able to mak ends meet, did not seem odd at all...you just expected that with hard work and faith in yourselves, you just knew, that somehow, things would always work out, and you and your family would be fine....

When BigDom and I married, we had not big bankroll, and had Mike in the first year....we were barely able to make ends meet, yet we always did, and were extremely happy....and a few dollars more in the bank, and along came Andy....still, we had enough to be happy...and shortly after that, Dom went into the full time army, and pay was even less than we were making as civilians...

But we were ok, we were able to buy a house, able to take camping vacations, had food and housing and clothing, and the boys had their toys and such and so, not dirt poor, but not wealthy, we struggled to daily provide a life for ourselves and our boys....

And in that struggle, I find, that those years were so very precious...there is much to be said, for going through a struggle and coming out on the other side...

Many of the young people of say, Andys generation, want to be more financially secure, before thinking about getting married and having a family...at least that is what I often see and hear the young people talking about...I wonder, if in opting for absolute financial security, before taking a plunge, they are forfeiting the happiness that comes from having lived through hard times, as well as good...

Or perhaps I am just blowing hot air...there are those, who feel its just plain unwise to plunge into marriage, and parenthood without the proper financial backing....

For myself, I am just glad we did it they way we did...to each his own, I guess...

Just some lazy Sunday afternoon musings....

On another note, its grand to see Clark Gable, doing his military duty...would that the 'stars' of today, feel such obligation...

Two handsome military dudes, just relaxing, and being a tempation to the ladies...

When my mom and dad married in 1944, Dad and all the men in the wedding party, wore their miltiary duds...and I remember thinking, especially when I was a little girl looking at their wedding album, that my daddy was the most handsome man in the world, made all the more handsome, by his military uniform...

We early boomers were raised by folks who had come through the Great Depression and WWII, and who knew how to survive by their wits and their own hard work. There were no government hand outs like we have today, and most of them were too proud to accept "charity" unless they had hit absolute rock-bottom in their lives. They did what they had to do to win WWII, came home, and got on with the business of living, working, and raising their families.

Then came the civil rights movement, the great society, birth controll pills and abortion rights, sex, drugs, and rock and roll...and it seems like the wheels got way out of alignment with the way things used to be. More and more people looked to governments to help them out, instead of being able to look inward for what it takes to make it in life and the liberals were more than happy to trade them goodies for votes.

To be any good, a marriage must be between two people who are willing to truly committ to making it work, no matter their ages or their bank balances at the time...this is much easier said than done way too often. I've found out that life is not a superhighway. There are pot-holes, speed bumps, stop & go signs, detours, and all other manner of challenges that must be faced and dealt with as we move through this thing called life.

Having someone you care about along for the ride is a good thing.

Thanks for sharing your musings with us - it's always a treat.

Cheers, and off to the grocer.

I know that feeling...I have got very bad arthritis in both of my knees, due to a falling-down-into-a-ravine accident, many many years ago...the docs warned me then, that as I aged, the arthritis would set in, and it surely has...

Too long at the computer, or too long sitting in one place, and my knees just lock up, and I cant move...have to stand there like a dunce, and haul my legs up and down, to loosen them up....whatta way to grow into older age...

I'm trying to do some stretching and limbering type excercises so Mrs.L doesn't discover me locked into position here - and I still don't have a decent chair after four attempts! They just don't sit the same in the stores as they do here.

Mrs.L loves pasta and wanted the angel hair type this evening: I like the stuff that accompanies pasta and am not all that keen on noodles and such, so I'll be grilling a little filet of beef to go with our salads and crusty french bread. Pretty simple stuff, but it suits us.

I guess I'll be messed up for a week or so trying to get used to daylight savings time...I've always thought that we should go to double daylight saving time in the fall. Getting dark at 5:30pm is just too early for me.

Cheers guys.

Your evening meal sounds quite delicious...I love pasta, and so does BigDom(being Sicilian, pasta to him, goes with just about anything)...we have lots of pasta, and lots of different rices...not much in potatoes tho, just occasionally have them....

Daylight Savings time, is grand for us, at the height of summer...it stays light here, until almost 10pm....the hitch being, that at the height of winter, it begins to get dark at 4pm....thats because we are so far north, especially in relation to you Loddy, there in Texas...

When Mike was sick in the hospital with leukemia, there was military couple who also had a son in intensive care(a terrible case..a 3month old baby with brain cancer)...anyway, this military couple was stationed in Alaska, but had come down to Ft. Lewis, because their son had to be treated at a Military Medical Center, that had a pediatric oncologist...and Ft Lewis was the closest center...

They had remarked, that during the summer months up there in Alaska, they would be out on the basketball court at 3am, because it was still light enough to play ball, without aid of lights..of course, I assume that in the winter, there was very little light during the daytime...

If you go down to Laguna San Ignacio or Mag Bay in Baja when the grays are there, some of the mothers will bring their calves up to the boats to meet people. You can pet them and even get a sloppy sort of kiss when they blow...lol
