Westy, you are a tough guy, who does not mind doing the defrosting...I like that...
You remind me of my dad, with what you said in one of your postings...I was a whining teen, whining about something or another, and no doubt exagerating the gravity of my situation, and my dad was listening to me
Then he rolled his eyes, sat me down, and said, 'Listen, if that is the worst thing that ever happens to you in life, you should thank your lucky stars...

Here is a short excerpt from my sons writings about his trip, musing about the food in Italy...
"The food in Italy is great overall, but after spending three months in Nepal and Tibet, I found all I wanted to do was eat! Funghi and olive pizza, prosciutto and mozeralla panini (sandwiches), the best gelato (ice cream) I've ever had, I figured the 10 kilos I lost trekking would come back in the first twenty four hours."
Sounds like he was having a food orgy, in Italy..

No, not a particularly tough guy, just came of age in a different age and climate...The depression and WWII made a lot of us what we are and were....Nobody else around to do the job that needed doing, if we hadn't a lot more people would be speaking German and Japanese....it was a little tougher than defrosting a fridge...lol...(:-)...

I think prosciutto is ham
they used to sell it in Italian stores in my old neighborhood
someone told me pizza was invented in Philadelphia (I wonder if that is true?)
I guess it was like he was on a huge long camping trip in mountains
I can understand why all he wanted to do was eat when he got to Sicily
he just didn't have enuf tasty food for long time

I know, we start talking about foods, and want that particular food, and cant get it...it can be very frustrating...

Prosciutto is cured ham that has been salted and hung for about a year, then sliced very thinly. The best comes from Parma.
So, you had some drama today, huh? Musy be the durn heat ;-)

i made grannie's grapenut custard today. it tasted delicious, but it was watery in the bottom. i used skim milk, not whole. do you think that's the reason?
To: palo verde
You are so right....while my son was trekking he would give in and eat some local foods, and then wind up with what my dad called the 'galloping sh@ts'...so he tried to survive on what he had brought with him....said he thinks he survived on Snickers Bars for weeks...
He loved the Tibetan people, but their bland and monotonous diet of noodle soup and yak butter tea, was just awful
When he offered the Tibetan nomads some of his candy, their eyes lit up, and they sure did grin, when they tasted such a sweet thing as a Snickers bar...
To: christine11
I dont know if that is the reason..but I do know, that one time I made pudding with skim milk, and it was really a disaster....

Well, time for me to go...have to play with Dizzy a little and then on to having our 'crabfest'...we will have our hair mussed by crab shells and tummies full of hot crab
See ya all tomorrow...

In his autobiography, comedian David Brenner noted, "I swore to myself that when I became a man and made some money, I would never eat at home but would eat every meal out. It was a priority. To me, food in the refrigerator is a symbol of poverty. When I see an empty refrigerator, I know I've got some bucks."Does this mean he never has to defrost the fridge...lol...

Chrissy.. absolute must.. Whole milk is best.. You can get away with 2%, but I rarely use it.. And beat those eggs like crazy..till thick and lemony colored.. (I use just a tad more grapenuts too, but not much, and stir a couple time before it's set.);) I use whole milk in most things.. I don't like skimmed or 1% for custards or Escalloped Potatoes and lots of other things.. Won't come out right, ever..
