Iran Gambles on Escalation With Surprise Attack on U.S. Forces

Airstrikes in Jordan show Iran’s Revolutionary Guard is willing to risk Trump’s retaliation

Iran’s surprise missile attack on U.S. forces in Jordan shows Tehran’s military leaders would rather risk ramping up the war than play defense or accept a peace deal that would expose them to greater domestic political pressures.

Iran fired ballistic missiles on U.S. troops early Wednesday local time, demonstrating a willingness by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which exerts more power than ever in Tehran, to escalate during a relative lull in the conflict and attempt to seize the initiative after weeks in which Iran has mostly reacted to U.S. and Israeli attacks.

President Trump was cited by Fox News as saying the U.S. would hit Iran hard in response to the attack. “They’re going to get a beating,” chief foreign correspondent Trey Yingst early Wednesday quoted Trump as telling him. The White House didn’t immediately respond to request for comment.

A senior Jordanian government official said five missiles were intercepted in Jordan’s eastern desert and caused no injuries or material damage. The official declined to comment on the specific targets of the missiles. U.S. troops are posted to a Jordanian base near the Syrian border and at a separate air base in the desert where an Iranian missile strike killed two American servicemembers earlier this month. The Jordanian official said the Iranian attack showed the region was undergoing dramatic change.

The attack illustrates a fundamental shift in which the IRGC has grown more assertive and more comfortable with a state of war that could continue for months, rather than enter into a peace in which it would have to face public dissatisfaction with Iran’s struggling economy and its lethal clampdown on protesters earlier this year, analysts say.

Any other time—— this would be an act of war and demand a full scale invasion

Especially since we had not struck anything in Iran for days, fine, if Iran wants to play, lets play, just bomb their asses already. They dont want to talk, they want violence, I say give it to them..by the way, all their lil drones were intercepted anyway

These religious fanatics want WW3. I doubt that killing some with dampen the enthusiasm of those left to carry on the struggle. This is not like dealing with a cartel or some corrupt dictator.

It probably shows that Iran is in communication with Trump’s Deep State opposition.

Perhaps. But Iran probably knows that ain't gonna happen. Or they don't even care if it did.

The only viable path to victory for the IRGC is thru the Democrat party. If they can made enough Americans tired of this war that the RATs seize power in Congress the RATs will happily surrender to this enemy.

How does that self inflicted handicap get corrected?

Iran thinks they’re winning - that they have Trump over a barrel, what with upcoming elections, fear of escalation, etc. Media reports that our defensive munitions have been depleted didn’t help much, either.

Not possible. Iran’s military is decimated, their Navy at the bottom of the sea. Remember?

They don't need to be. I guarantee you that Iran will be in full-scale war mode by mid-October to do as much political damage to Trump as possible.

I hope our guys have a plan to cope with that. If not, it's Goodnight Irene.

I was against this 'war' from the start because Iran has been 'weeks away' from a nuke for the last 30 years. But now I'm afraid that we're getting sucked into yet another 'limited' or 'proportional' conflict that will end up causing a real disaster in November with the Rats riding it to a takeover of Congress.

IMO, that's worse than an Iranian nuke.

I’m almost open to the idea that IRGC could get their hands on a nuke only to mishandle it and blow themselves up on Pickaxe Mountain in the process.

Baloney.

“Iran attacks U.S. troops posted to the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan” is a headline that would make the founders of this country vomit in their graves.

because Iran has been 'weeks away' from a nuke for the last 30 years.

Iran's opening position at our "peace talks" was: "We already have enough enriched uranium to develop 11 bombs".

You're the President, how do you respond to that?

“Iran attacks U.S. troops posted to the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan” is a headline that would make the founders of this country vomit in their graves.

The United States has only been invaded by a foreign military power twice since gaining independence. Invasions occurred during the War of 1812 and World War II.The War of 1812 (1812–1814):

Great Britain invaded the United States. British forces carried out multiple incursions along the U.S. coast and northern borders, capturing Washington, D.C., in August 1814 and burning the White House and Capitol.

World War II (1942–1943): Imperial Japan invaded the U.S. Territory of Alaska, occupying the Aleutian Islands of Attu and Kiska starting on June 3, 1942. This culminated in the Aleutian Islands Campaign, with U.S. and Canadian forces recapturing the islands in August 1943.

The reason we havent been invaded more often is two fold: For one, we are blessed by being surrounded by large oceans East and West. Second, we decided at some point in our 250 year history that we would rather fight the enemy on his turf than have the enemy here on our turf.

So you comment is debatable. The founders may not have envisioned the world we face today, but I think they would understand it and doubt they would disagree with taking the fight to the enemy.

If the US military has learned anything from the Ukraine war and this limited war with Iran, it must develop an effective anti drone technology. These drones have become so sophisticated that they can strike with pinpoint precision from up to 4,000 km. A drone was able to collide with an Apache helicopter on a night flight. Suspect Chinese engineers somewhere are celebrating.
