JD Vance, RFK Jr. and other officials swear by a diet of grass-fed meat and fermented foods, even when the sulfurous odors cause friction at home
A new diet is sweeping through President Trump’s cabinet—and it involves heaping portions of sauerkraut. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Vice President JD Vance have all embraced the diet, drawn by the promise of slimmer waistlines and glowing skin. They all apparently have determined the health benefits outweigh the slightly sulfurous odors that have been the cause of some domestic friction.
“Within 30 days I lost 20 pounds,” Kennedy said at an event in Michigan this week. “JD Vance is also on the diet and you can see how different he looks.” The diet is the brainchild of Dr. Sean O’Mara, who advises his high-profile patients to eat fermented foods such as sauerkraut and kimchi, alongside grass-fed steak—and to abstain from alcohol and sugary food.
O’Mara says the diet leads to a reduction in visceral fat, which wraps around organs, as well as a more robust microbiome, which can help with digestion. Kennedy, 72, was the first to convert. Lutnick, 64, and Duffy, 54, followed suit. Vance, 41, committed to the diet for Lent earlier this year, and has stuck with it. “I tend to like to work with older people because the ROI is so much greater…. it’s like taking over a sinking ship, a company that is headed to bankruptcy,” O’Mara said. He declined to discuss his patients, citing privacy concerns. But people familiar with the matter said Kennedy, Lutnick and Duffy have all seen O’Mara.

I am now convinced, at age 86, that age does not make you weak. It is lack of regular aerobic activity which weakens the body, causing falls and joint pains and heart issues.
I never eat sauerkraut, my weight stays below 155 on a 5’-8” frame, no matter what I eat. I have not been sick since 1990.
I require no prescriptions and have no aches or pains anywhere in my body. No flu, No covid, No colds, no fevers in 26 years since I discovered daily exercise.
bkmk
Maybe, but it would be less and not as reliable.
Raw vinegar (including raw apples cider vinegar) will have some probiotics, but not remotely in the scale of what is in natural sauerkraut (that is in your refrigeration section).
The cabbage itself is also has tons of fiber, vitamin A, K and various phytonutrients.
My relatives used to serve sauerkraut and pork every New Year’s Day dinner when I was a kid. I hated it. The pork was ok, but not the sauerkraut. And I’m mostly of German descent LOL.
Were they from Pennsylvania?

A garlic and lemon seasoned pork loin baked on a bed of good quality sauerkraut mixed with onion and apple slices.
____________
As long as you doing it for taste and not health reason....once over 115 F, the heat kills the probiotics....
Close, Ohio.
It is almost always served at funerals and wedding, as well as at home. Eastern European staple.
1 seasoned pork loin
1 white onion sliced into 1-2” pieces.
2 apples - we like 1 red and 1 green - wedged but not too thin
1 package of good sauerkraut. Not a cheepo.
Mix-up the kraut, onions, and apples into a large glass pyrex pan - I think ours is 9x14”.
Place the pork loin on top.
Bake till the loin is 165 degrees.
So sorry - I forgot the pepper. Lot’s of ground pepper all over the kraut mix.
Thank you. I’m a big fan of sauerkraut, but don’t always have it on hand.
For taste. This is iirc an English meal. A staple in my wife’s family from her mom’s side.
We take a lot of probiotics in our daily vitamin/supplement regime.
I’m convinced that is all in how you pick your grandparents.
My liberal daughter in Minnesota swears by this addition of sauerkraut into her diet. She eats them with a lentil concoction her boyfriend makes. Life is just too short to have to deal with the noxious odor every day IMO.
There is a wonderful fermented garlic fresh saurkraut that we all love!
Thank you! I was thinking that pepper goes with out saying. It wouldn’t be any good without pepper.
That’s good for you (without sugar in it) but it’s NOT fermented, which is this whole fad.
