Synopsis A comprehensive analysis of global dietary studies reveals that even minimal consumption of processed meat elevates the risk of type 2 diabetes, colorectal cancer, and ischemic heart disease. Researchers found no safe threshold for processed meat, sugar-sweetened beverages, and trans fats. Experts advocate for a balanced approach, emphasizing moderation and increased intake of beneficial foods for long-term health.

==================================================================

A new analysis of global dietary studies has found compelling evidence that even small amounts of processed meat may raise the risk of serious chronic diseases. According to researchers, there is no "safe amount" of processed meat consumption when it comes to the risk of developing conditions such as type 2 diabetes, colorectal cancer, and ischemic heart disease.

The findings, published Monday in the journal Nature Medicine, are based on data from over 60 previous studies evaluating the impact of processed meat, sugar-sweetened beverages, and industrial trans fatty acids on human health.

While the study is based on observational data and cannot directly prove causation, the consistency and volume of evidence make a strong case for reducing intake of these food item, researchers said.

Processed foods, sugary beverages, and disease risk

The study found that eating as little as one hot dog per day increased the risk of type 2 diabetes by 11 per cent and colorectal cancer by 7 per cent compared to those who ate none.

Similarly, consuming a single 12-ounce sugary beverage daily was associated with an 8 per cent higher risk of type 2 diabetes and a 2 per cent increased risk of ischemic heart disease.

“These findings support earlier research, reinforcing that minimizing intake of processed meat, sugar-sweetened beverages, and trans fats is crucial to improving health out ..

I like hot dogs very much, but I don’t eat one every day. I didn’t even do that when I lived in NYC where they are readily available from street carts!

I eat hot dogs maybe twice a year and enjoy them. I’ll accept the risk.

When I was a young married man struggling to pay bills and raise a family, I ate a hot dog with Ramen Noodles every day for lunch for years..............Of course I had a quad By-pass in 2020, but that had nothing to do with the hot dogs, I’m sure...... 😏

Well, they have graphs and everything, so it must be true. If the hot dog is wrapped in cornmeal and deep fried, will it still kill you?

Colorectal cancer, huh?
I serious matter, I understand. But just what are they doing with these hotdogs ... especially the Costco-size ones?

Years back, when shopping for a Care Facility was part of my job, I often went to Cost-Co. They had this fantastic Hot Dog there for just, $2., if I recall. I loved them. These Dogs were foot long Polish Sausages, on a soft toasted bun. You could put as much sauerkraut and ketchup on them that you wanted to. No one was going to stop you. Even then, I wasn’t “Eating a Dog” more than three times in a month. That’s a lot of food.

I mean how many live does Joey Chestnut have?

And BTW, in some states, putting ketchup on a hot dog lands you in jail...
