Researchers warn common food ingredient unique to America turbocharges cancer
Daily Mail UK ^ | December 06, 2024 | MAIYA FOCHT - HEALTH REPORTER

Eating a specific type of sugar can turbocharge cancers and make them more deadly, according to new research.

Fructose — which is added to thousands of US food and drinks — was found to speed up the growth of certain kinds of skin, breast and cervical tumors.

The study showed this type of sugar gets converted by the liver into components that tumors need to build new cells and grow.

The more quickly a tumor grows, the more aggressive the cancer may become - able to take over a person's body before they can fight back.

Added fructose is sugar that is extracted from sources like corn and added to processed foods, most commonly in the form of high fructose corn syrup.

Some early studies have suggested that eating more of these processed sugars might not just accelerate cancer growth, but could also be a cause of some kinds of cancer.

Added fructose is different from fruit fructose, a natural sugar found in fruits that is typically accompanied by fiber and other nutrients that slow down its absorption into the blood.

In the US, manufacturers are generally allowed to add fructose to foods without limitation, which means its found in high amounts in many different processed foods.

Similarly developed nations have issued caps on the additive — the EU only permits a fraction of the sugar in its processed foods.

This creates a food system in the US where fructose, and high fructose corn syrup, is found in sweetened items, like soda, fruit juice and yogurt, as well in unexpected items, like pasta sauce, salad dressing.

The sugar market is highly political, and protected in many countries

The EU makes sugar, mostly from beets. They have effectively banned fructose, for economic and local agriculture lobby political reasons as well.

The USA makes beet sugar, makes a lot of cheap fructose (an isomer of sucrose), and also passes out import permits for cane sugar (sucrose) on a very political formula, to countries like Philippines, Thailand and Brazil

The article also admits that it’s found in fruit so it seems that perhaps it’s not the amount but how fast it’s absorbed.

The *study* proves nothing.

I try to avoid HFCS. That stuff is worse than Cyclamate.

Yep. Sugar in general and high-fructose corn syrup in particular.

You missed this.

Why would cancer cells have different nutritional needs from other cells?

In some Cancer cells mitochondria have their metabolism function altered.

It switches off the metabolism of sugar and switches on the metabolism of fat for the energy for cell use.

In the body the liver changes fructose in to fat.

Cancer cells generate 2 ATP per glucose molecule instead of the normal 36 ATP per glucose molecule using the normal aerobic Kreb's cycle. Glucose needed by the body is wasted and so is the body that needs it.

Fructose is not “unique to America” at all. It’s one of the simple sugars, that sucrose (table sugar) gets broken down into by enzymes of the body.

I thank God always that in the 80’s I discovered the Rodale family and the original Prevention magazine.

Like many of you, I’ve known lab-made frustose and HFCS is poison - and have avoided it for decades. (Likewise - thank you Rodale family - soy, tofu, partially hydrogenated oils, canoloa, vegetable oil, scents, and several other substances have been banned or avoided.

Anyway, for you FReeps who don’t read so good, the article says:

...” ***Added fructose is sugar that is extracted from sources like corn and added to processed foods, most commonly in the form of high fructose corn syrup ****

....

...” ***Added fructose is different from fruit fructose, a natural sugar found in fruits that is typically accompanied by fiber and other nutrients that slow down its absorption into the blood” ...

In the US, manufacturers are generally allowed to add fructose to foods without limitation, which means its found in high amounts in many different processed foods”

I hope that explains the difference between salad dressing, Coke, and an apple.

I don’t know the biological mechanism behind cancer cells demand for sugar.
But, the PETN scan uses a radioactive sugar for detecting cancer. The radiologically visible sugar concentrates in cancerous tumors.

Personally been through the process three times.

Interesting! Thanks!

Guess the body handles fructose differently from sucrose. Being a mild diabetic, I stay away from the sugary stuff.

It's different!

Very helpful.

Mother Nature and human beings have been genetically modifying fructose for the last 10,000 years.

But now, it can be deadly?

I have good news, ladies.

If you maintain a BMI healthy weight, if you avoid tobacco, if you avoid alcohol or drink in moderation, if you get moderate exercise every day, and if you have (or had) healthy parents, you have a 90% chance of living to age 80.

Unless Trump kills Big Corn and the ethanol tax credit subsidy welfare queens of the corn belt (who have also managed to double and even triple down with wind and solar) there is no way Jr wins any battles that lessen the use of high fructose corn syrup. We will see. But my guess is that killing waste and making government efficient doesn’t mean telling Iowa Republicans that they will lose their most cherished and outrageous form of welfare. The poor food stamp unemployed mother of 4 has nothing on that crowd.

It is the artificial concentration as a added ingredient, compared to the quantities present in say, an apple.
