Ok, so, yesterday we went to Dennys.
My wife got a Cobb salad, no drink.
I and my son both got chicken fried steak and eggs (they call it country fried because people today think chicken fried steak has chicken).
I got coffee, the boy got a milkshake.
Three entrees, two drinks.
What do you think the total was after tax but before tip?

Before looking I guessed $68.
When I was growing up we almost never went out to a restaurant.
When we were traveling, or on vacation. But even on vacation my mom brought powdered milk and cereal.
Going out to a restaurant was just not a thing.

My wife and I used to love to eat out. We don’t do it much anymore. I fear this is going to have a trickle down effect, too, because based on what I read on this thread, we are not alone.
Have a friend in a nursing home and bring lunch once a week. She wanted a personal pan pizza and a salad and drink from a local pizza place. For the both of us it was over $30 plus a tip. I certainly would do again since she looks forward to our luncheons. But the prices are something else. Now McDonald’s is touting a $5 meal . . . .lot of nutrition there. NOT!

I like to try chicken fried steak at all the independent diners I can when traveling.
Not for Denny’s. Like one of the posters before mentioned they could have gone to Golden Corral for that price and gotten more for their money.

I know this will sound sexist, that is not at all my intent.
I have indeed noticed this about the fairer sex..
It is as if they are in denial about our present financial reality. It seems the ones in my family are unable or unwilling to face why I can't retire early, why we can't take vacations every year, and yes, why we can't eat out like we did in the Trump economy.
The best description I can come up with is a sort of normalcy bias.. Is anyone else observing this? or.. is it just as prevalent among men?
We eat out about half as often as we used to. And when the bill comes, we get angry. The bottom line never really bothered us before.
Actually more and more Chik fil a are opening.

I read somewhere that chicken-fried steak has white gravy and country-fried steak has brown gravy. I invite any aficionados of this cuisine to set me straight.

Yep, normalcy bias is EXACTLY what it is and it does seem stronger in women than men. For example, no one in my immediate family has been victimized by crime (to any significant level), and this evening, my wife and I are sitting together in our nice, comfortable, house.
So, in her mind, everything is fine - regardless of what I tell her or what evidence I present. Our sons, on the other hand, are either through with this country, or in the process of leaving - but don’t get me started on our daughters.

The waitress said you know it’s not chicken. I said said of course. She said they tell people who call chicken fried steak that.
