Family meal at Dennys. How much you think it cost?
Self/Chat | 6/23/24 | Self/Chat

Ok, so, yesterday we went to Dennys.

My wife got a Cobb salad, no drink.

I and my son both got chicken fried steak and eggs (they call it country fried because people today think chicken fried steak has chicken).

I got coffee, the boy got a milkshake.

Three entrees, two drinks.

What do you think the total was after tax but before tip?

I’ll say in the comment.

If I was going to pay that much I would have went to golden corral

Ah! Golden Corral. They are gone in South Florida but back in 2019 when President Trump was in office, I was able to eat there on the cheap cheap. I would arrive just before 4 PM when I could still pay lunch prices and then dine on the dinner buffet. But wait... THERE'S MORE! I used electronic gift cards that I bought for half price on eBay so the net result was I was able to eat dinner at Golden Corral for just under $5... Until they eventually REFUSED to accept electronic gift cards.

BTW, the late great Charles Henrickson dined with us at a Golden Corral in the Tampa area in the summer of 2019 when there was a Lutheran convention in that city. The total cost for SIX of us including Charles was only about $36, not including the nice tip we left.

ps. I have a pic of Charles and I at the Golden Corral and perhaps will post it.

It’s “good” for the economy. Just another round of stimulus or reparations checks away from an even $100 per person.

Yep....try going to Captain D’s and get something to eat for two not having had the opportunity to scan the ads in the neighborhood papers for the specials and add cut outs (only on Wed in my area, IIRC)

I’m thinking of moving to Mississippi.

Some of my ancestors live there before they went to Texas.

“(they call it country fried because people today think chicken fried steak has chicken).”

Well, at least I got a laugh.

Strange, I had just noticed a hundred dollar bill underneath my computer, and sadly thinking about how that use to be money.

Our local diner. Each of us ordered two eggs, breakfast links (3), home fries, coffee and two pieces of toast. $36.00 before tip.

Growing up in the 1950s eating out was rare (so rare that the only time I can remember eating in a restaurant was when we were traveling).

We did have a lot of pic-nics (most likely someone’s birthday) and it was pot luck everyone bringing something.

If people were smart they would put away their credit cards (trying to pay the balance off) and only buy with cash. With the credit card it is way too easy to spend more money then you have and if you don’t pay off the balance each month that special meal out will end up costing more then you think.

Now is the time to be frugal. Everyone still working should assume they will soon lose their job and save accordingly.

My GOD ..I guess that's why a Denny is out of business here!!

Of course, a BIG MAC meal is $15...

You live in California. High indirect taxes and Biden inflation affect the whole supply chain. So there’s that.

first of all, avoid going to a denny’s. they are not hygenic establishments (in my past experiences).

Indeed here in Los Angeles it’s not unusual to see three family’s living in one.

The last time I was in a Dennys, I think it was Buena Park, CA. I called it, (no Bueno Park). I happened to look up above our table, and saw the perfect silhouette of a rat walking on the transparent plastic neon light cover. We got up and walked out before they could even take our order.

I guessed $75, wo tip.

Not a surprise, but I would not spend dime at Denny’s. I personally have zero interest in these generic cafeteria style dinner experiences. Give me a nice restaurant, give me a good dive bar, but not the predictable experience.

Food inflation is insane but when everything has to be trucked and gas is 33% higher than when Trump was in office, it shouldn’t be a surprise.

I was going to guess $50 but we don’t eat out any more because of food sensitivity issues I have.

My boyfriend and I go to Texas Roadhouse fairly regularly. We both order a low-priced entree (two sides) with water to drink; check for the two of us before tip is about $29.

I bet you can even do better at a good mom and pop diner in Mississippi.
I love the Chicken Fried Steak and here's where I find it in Wellington Ohio (home of the Spirit of 76).

“Yep. Yep.

Doubled in four years.“

We just had this discussion in the break room at work last Wednesday. One coworker had a bag of Doritos. He paid $6.99 for it.

“Some, if most of the credit card machines now include the sales tax when calculating the tip”

Our grandson pointed that out to me recently when I picked up the tab for 2 hamburgers, one French fry order and one fried onion ring order.

The total came to $46.

Three years ago the total including tip was $26.

“INSANE....GO TRUMP”

Life was so much better under Trump! But I an afraid that when/if he takes office in 2025, some of these prices won’t drop.

I’m pretty sure gas will be cheaper because it dropped under Trump before, and some groceries will, but wonder if restaurants will lower prices. It’s considered a luxury and they may decide to keep the status quo - because they can.
