“The best description I can come up with is a sort of normalcy bias.. Is anyone else observing this? or.. is it just as prevalent among men? “
Yep, normalcy bias is EXACTLY what it is and it does seem stronger in women than men. For example, no one in my immediate family has been victimized by crime (to any significant level), and this evening, my wife and I are sitting together in our nice, comfortable, house.
So, in her mind, everything is fine - regardless of what I tell her or what evidence I present. Our sons, on the other hand, are either through with this country, or in the process of leaving - but don’t get me started on our daughters.
I’ll take that as , “Yes.. I have indeed observed this!”
