I am very casual about wrapping my bread for freezing. I just put ten slices or so in a zip loc. zip loc can be reused many times. I don’t even wash it!

Thanks very much. I hadn’t had the greatest success, probably because I was just trusting the wrapping it comes in.

We live on a farm, so it would be a SIN to NOT take advantage of all the money-saving things we can do around here, when it comes to feeding ourselves.

*Grow a Food Garden. 16 raised beds and a greenhouse. Eat our fill and can, dehydrate and freeze the rest. I can keep fresh salad greens going until November in the unheated greenhouse, under cover. A second ‘Big Garden’ that will be converted to raised beds when the price of lumber comes back down. Right now we grow potatoes, corn and winter squash in there. It’s a mess and always a ‘treasure hunt,’ LOL!

*Fruit trees and small fruits. We have Peaches, Cherries, Apples, Pears, Grapes & Raspberries.

*Hunt & Fish - pretty much free protein! We butcher our own venison and clean our own fish. I LOVE Fish Tacos. I could live on them, LOL! Beau also hunts bear, elk and moose, though that’s not as reliable as raising a steer.

*Raise chickens for eggs and meat.

*Raise a beef steer we get FOR FREE from the neighbor who has a dairy (he rents our production land for dairy crops) and needs to cull out the boys. Takes 15 months to finish one. Raised on hay and grain in the winter, and grazed on grass all spring, summer and fall. Cheap to raise. Breaks down to about $3.50/pound for all cuts when butchered. (We take them to ‘The Spa.’)

Forage. Mushrooms; Morel and Golden Oyster. Mulberries, Black Cap Raspberries, Blackberries and Elderberries.

I’ll do a separate post on how I save $$$ in the kitchen and on other groceries we buy.

We FINALLY got a Costco within 30 miles of us. Yay! I’m buying Beau a membership for his Birthday this fall.

Mom’s 85th birthday is coming up this month. She wants to go out to eat and then tour the new Costso, LOL!

The nut didn’t fall far from the tree, that’s for sure!

Hi. I hope you are doing well.

Forage. Mushrooms; Morel and Golden Oyster. Mulberries, Black Cap Raspberries, Blackberries and Elderberries.

One time, long ago we went seeking mushrooms in the pasture.

Odd that some of the mushrooms grew near cow patties.

We washed them off, and boiled them.

I haven’t been the same since.

“I’m serious... would love to know.”

My wife is studious on clipping coupons from newspapers and mailers. This includes restaurant coupons. She also goes to multiple grocery stores to buy what’s on sale. She shows me the receipts and we save about $150 bucks a week. I am not wealthy but I eat steak every week.

You can still find deals on WHOLE chickens. If you don’t know how to roast one, try this recipe. It’s the best I’ve found.

Skillet-Roasted Whole Chicken with Lemon and Potatoes:

https://www.bettycrocker.com/recipes/skillet-roasted-whole-chicken-with-lemon-and-potatoes/38a0eda0-1fc3-4962-b9ef-e4133425a858

And a roast chicken will give you leftovers for DAYS to make into other dishes. Chicken Fajitas. Chicken Salad. Chicken Soup. Chicken Noodle Casserole. (And make stock from the bones and skin!)

And go back to just cooking the basics; there truly IS nothing new under the sun when it comes to cooking. Food just has better lighting, fancier photos and they just add Curry Powder or Garam Masala to everything, now.

Big flock of chickens = meat + eggs + trash disposal
Small herd of cows = meat + $$$
Big garden = veg. Can/freeze a bunch for winter.
NEVER eat out except when traveling.
Home-made bread from home-ground flour. mmmmmm...
Watch those sales at the grocery stores.

We don’t economize much on food, but one thing that bugs me is the price of chicken. I buy the larger packs of 5-6 breasts that are about $12 a pack and then freeze them individually in plastic bags.
