Scientists find fossil from THE DAY the dinosaurs died 66m years ago: Leg of Thescelosaurus was 'ripped off in aftermath' of huge asteroid strike that wiped out most species on Earth Dinosaurs were wiped out by the Chicxulub event - a plummeting asteroid that hit Earth 66 million years ago

The asteroid more than six miles in diameter slammed into what is now Mexico, leaving a 93-mile wide crater Experts found the fossilised leg of a dinosaur killed and what appears to be a fragment of the asteroid itself

Findings were made at Tanis, a renowned paleontological site in North Dakota that formed at time of impact A new BBC documentary presented by Sir David Attenborough will reveal several of the new findings at Tanis

A fossilized leg of a dinosaur that died on the day the Chicxulub asteroid hit Earth 66 million years ago has been unearthed alongside a fragment of the space rock that killed it, experts say.

The leg fossil, found at the Tanis site in North Dakota, belonged to a Thescelosaurus, a small herbivore, and is likely to have been ripped off after the asteroid hit and caused a flash flood.

Palaeontologists say it's the first dinosaur victim from the famous asteroid strike – which left a 93-mile-wide impact crater in what is today the Gulf of Mexico – that has ever been discovered.

The creature was 'buried on the day of impact', they claim. They also think they've unearthed a tiny fragment from the asteroid, which totaled more than six miles in diameter

The remarkable discoveries were made by University of Manchester palaeontologist Robert DePalma at a famous dig site called Tanis in North Dakota, discovered in 2008 and nicknamed 'the dinosaur graveyard'.

I wonder why the crocodiles survived.

My guess is that everything that survived was either a burrow nester, no mammal larger that a house cat survived, many birds, some are also burrow nesters, or buried its eggs as do turtles and snakes, or placed them in large, often wet, debris piles like crocodiles.

The Chicxulub impact was worst possible case, a shallow water impact. Imagine a 90 mile wide white hot crater with sea water flooding in from all sides. It would be like a rocket engine blasting steam and entrained air into space.

The world could have lost half its air into space!

Burrow dwellers are accustomed to low oxygen environments. Burrow dwellers are protected from surface fires and the rain of red hot debris. Surface dwellers, not so much...

“I wonder why the crocodiles survived.”

Keith Richards and cockroaches survived this asteroid.

“Of course any fan of The Far Side knows the *real* reason dinosaurs became extinct.”

I can’t believe nobody’s posted that cartoon yet.

It’s well known that letting Gloria Jones drive killed T-Rex.

To save themselves the dinosaurs decided to make a T-Rex army. But the best they could manage was small arms.

This scientific paper describes a cataclysmic event caused by a meteor and studied at Tanis. In summary, all heck broke loose .

Thanks for the link you sent me.
