What is a low-carb diet? Don’t ask Harvard!

At Diet Doctor, we are very clear about defining low-carb. We define ketogenic low carb diets as less than 20 grams of net carbs per day, moderate low carb as 20-50 grams per day, and liberal low carb as 50-100 grams per day. Assuming a 2,000 kcal diet, that equates to <4%, <10% and <20% of total calories.

The latest nutritional epidemiology study out of Harvard, published this week in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, is another misrepresentation of low-carb diets.

The lowest of the low-carb eaters still sourced 46% of their calories from carbohydrates. That was the lowest! That is more than twice the amount of our highest level, the liberal low-carb diet, defined as less than 20% carbs. That is really all we need to know about the study. It is painfully clear that any of the conclusions have nothing to do with a low-carb diet.

Agree. I think today’s wheat is basically sugar in disguise. The other carbs, potato and rice, aren’t great either (and obviously are severely restricted if low-carb), but sugar/wheat seems to set off a chain reaction, and it’s next to impossible to not gain weight, as the obesity rates in the West are proving.

Your body cannot process that much protein unless you are doing heavy physical activity so your body basically converts it to a carb. Too much protein in a keto diet will actually prevent you from reaching keto and too much in general can damage your kidneys.

So very healthy diet for me.

Yeah but no meats, dairy or animal fats like butter is healthy. But, unfortunately most people are set in their ways and have to discover this for themselves on their own time.

There isn’t much common ground when it comes to diets, mainly due to activists on the Left, but about the one thing most agree on is that too much protein is not healthy for people, and the proper amount is about 20%. Going higher stresses the kidneys and simply isn’t needed (others here can help me on this).

The real debate is what the makeup of the other macros should be - and that is either fat (in some form) or carbs.

I did Atkins over 15 years ago and lost weight. I found I could not go down to zero carbs and had to moderate it a bit. I would get very shaky and feel sick. Moderating it a bit got rid of that. After a year I got off Atkins and slowly gained the weight back over the years. Cutting calories did not work for me.

When I turned 66 my husband and I went on Keto which is very similar. I found again I could not go as low as my husband on carbs without being shaky etc. So.... I eat some carbs for breakfast. Did great and lost the 25 pounds I wanted to. It didn’t happen overnight. My husband lost weight quickly - 90 pounds for him.

So now I am where I want to be and I keep the carbs very low so as not to put it back on. Feel great, never hungry.

My advice is to try again. Perhaps do what I did, don’t go to zero.

I wasn’t promoting Keto. I know it’s a keto thread...
Glucogenesis occurs. I understand the literature.
I also stated walking, yoga, and lifting to the poster.
I’ve eaten around that ratio for 30 years. Perfect blood panel.

Active people an consume a lot more, but still do not need to eat anywhere near 200g of protein a day unless you are 200+lb male thats in good shape and active. A 140 pound sedentary woman eating 40% of her calories from protein (~200g) would not be remotely healthy. If you went to 75% fat/20%P/5% carbs (all from low carb veggies) your ratio would likely be even better.

I don't judge how other people eat. If you think eliminating meats and dairy is the way to go, knock yourself out.

I'm pretty darn healthy eating the way I eat and despite being in my late 50s, I still have almost inexhaustible energy during the day and I need only about six hours sleep - which is a very deep sleep with lots of vivid dreams.

And I know you weren’t promoting keto, but a lot of keto newbies still believe fat is bad and just to load up on protein, and it never works for them and sometimes can damage their kidneys. Humans adapted by eating a lot of fat. It’s only been in recent millenia that we’ve had access to carbs and until a few hundred years ago, peasants didnt’ have enough money to consume enough calories to get fat no matter what type (fat/protein/carb) they ate so it didn’t matter.

I eat one or two macadamia nuts when I crave sweets. I also have the 0 carb water flavorings that help me with sweets.

Look into intermittent fasting if your weight loss stalls and weight loss is your goal.u

Mentally track carbs... Aim for no more than 20 net/30 total carbs. That means cutting the carby fruit and carby milk products. For instance, even low carb yogurt is higher in carbs.

The most reliable, near-term effect of me to and low carb diets is a dramatic drop in triglycerides in the blood—which is the actual fat in your blood. What you just posted is obvious bunk.
