Immune discovery 'may treat all cancer'
BBC ^ | 01/20/2020 | By James Gallagher Health and science correspondent

A newly-discovered part of our immune system could be harnessed to treat all cancers, say scientists.

The Cardiff University team discovered a method of killing prostate, breast, lung and other cancers in lab tests.

The findings, published in Nature Immunology, have not been tested in patients, but the researchers say they have "enormous potential".

Experts said that although the work was still at an early stage, it was very exciting. What have they found?

Our immune system is our body's natural defence against infection, but it also attacks cancerous cells.

The scientists were looking for "unconventional" and previously undiscovered ways the immune system naturally attacks tumours.

What they found was a T-cell inside people's blood. This is an immune cell that can scan the body to assess whether there is a threat that needs to be eliminated.

The difference is this one could attack a wide range of cancers.

"There's a chance here to treat every patient," researcher Prof Andrew Sewell told the BBC.

He added: "Previously nobody believed this could be possible.

"It raises the prospect of a 'one-size-fits-all' cancer treatment, a single type of T-cell that could be capable of destroying many different types of cancers across the population." How does it work?

T-cells have "receptors" on their surface that allow them to "see" at a chemical level.

The Cardiff team discovered a T-cell and its receptor that could find and kill a wide range of cancerous cells in the lab including lung, skin, blood, colon, breast, bone, prostate, ovarian, kidney and cervical cancer cells.

Crucially, it left normal tissues untouched.

The treatments probably won’t help him. But he wants to help patients in the future by allowing the doctors to study his condition and try new things.

I read about his type of cancer when he was diagnosed two years ago. The life expectancy for that type of cancer is two to four months.

My wife has Stage 4 cancer. We met with her doctors last Friday. They were very optimistic about many new developments in the last five years that have shown a fair amount of success.

“We’ve all seen claims like this before and amazingly they just kinda disappear into the ether.”

This is fact.

T-CAR therapy runs about $500k; it must be customized to the individual.

Might be interesting to see if any standardization in the process / equipment might bring down the cost. Graft vs. Host Disease.

My husband was diagnosed with stage 3b lung cancer early October. Just finished 35 targeted radiation treatments and 6 weeks of chemo. Follow up scan in February. Starts immunotherapy after results come in. They are having success with immunotherapy drugs.

In all seriousness. A dear friend was diagnosed in 1990 with leukemia. She struggled in and out of remission for five years then had a bone marrow transplant which within two years was rejected. Her doctors at OSU James cancer center used at that time an experimental TCELL treatment from her original bone marrow donor. She was out of options. Now Almost twenty years later she is cancer free and living a normal life enjoying her grandchildren.

Mine was Stage 3 Stomach Tumor. Four Chem Chemo for 10 weeks, full heavy side effects, then full stomach removal. Lost a lot of weight and will eat tiny meals forever. Doing close-out pill chemo now but not a trace remained in biopsy — only a scar inside the stomach where the tumor had been. Still bad neuropathy in hands and feet — hope it fades but it may not.

May God have mercy; that is intense. Did not know you could live without a stomach (cut the jokes). Pinging some others who may be interested and or pray for you.

Thanks for sharing. Grace and peace thru Jesus the Lord.

Why do I remember reading this 15 or more years ago? It’s long been known that T-cells in our body NORMALLY kill cancer cells.....and keep most cancer-free.

But something happens sometimes to where the T-cells cannot do their job - and the cancer cells multiply.

I know I read about this many years ago - yet this talks like it has just been discovered......

???????????

EVERY cell in your body must have glucose, not just the cancerous ones.

“And this is the first and last time anyone will ever hear of it.”

Exactly ... just like a story about a year ago about scientists in Israel hot on the trail of making a “cure-all for cancer” using gene therapy.

One and done ... never to be heard from again.
