The sun follows the rhythm of the planets

One of the big questions in solar physics is why the Sun's activity follows a regular cycle of 11 years. Researchers from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), an independent German research institute, now present new findings, indicating that the tidal forces of Venus, Earth and Jupiter influence the solar magnetic field, thus governing the solar cycle.

The article states further down:

"As with the gravitational pull of the Moon causing tides on Earth, planets are able to displace the hot plasma on the Sun's surface. Tidal forces are strongest when there is maximum Venus-Earth-Jupiter alignment; a constellation that occurs every 11.07 years. But the effect is too weak to significantly perturb the flow in the solar interior, which is why the temporal coincidence was long neglected."

There's a lot of interesting stuff there.

Been wondering if the suns mag field induces the Earths mag field?

Sounds like something dreamed up by the O’Rourke/Ocasio-Cortez brain trust.

Always looking for an explanation, but overlooking the master planner.

No.

That bunch believes in manmade global warming.

The periodic cycles of the sun, and there are longer cycles than 11 years too, drive actual change.

If anything this actual science leads you away from the political consensus affair of AGW..

Earth’s magnetic field is caused by currents in the liquid iron outer core, which in turn are caused by the Coriolis effect of the earth’s spin, similar to how hurricanes are caused by winds moving north or south, experiencing different rotational speeds. Currents in an electrically conducting fluid are capable of retaining a magnetic field according to the dynamo theory.

I read somewhere that the gravitational pull on a human at birth by the stars and other planets is less that the pull of the attending physician. So SUCK IT, astrologists.

I knew off the top of my head that Jupiter revolves around the sun about every 11 years.

I also knew that the sunspot cycles seemed to repeat about every 11 years.

I feel like an idiot for not making the connection. How can this be news? Are our scientists too busy trying to earn federal grants?

It’s not much fun to say ‘God did it,’ every time a phenomenon arises. Not for most of us, anyway.

It is unlikely. Jupiter’s orbital period is 11.86 years, whereas the sunspot cycle averages out to 11.05 years. And the sunspots are actually representative of variations in the Sun’s magnetic field, which because it changes in polarity actually has a full cycle of 22 years.

It is also believed to be generated by events deep in the Sun, so it is difficult to conceive of any physical force from Jupiter that would be strong enough to drive it.
