Earth’s magnetic field is caused by currents in the liquid iron outer core, which in turn are caused by the Coriolis effect of the earth’s spin, similar to how hurricanes are caused by winds moving north or south, experiencing different rotational speeds. Currents in an electrically conducting fluid are capable of retaining a magnetic field according to the dynamo theory.

No evidence of that the decay of the earth magnetic field is one of the things that points to a young earth.
