Abstract
The aging process is a universal phenomenon shared by all living organisms. The identification of longevity genes is important in that the study of these genes is likely to yield significant insights into human senescence.
In this study, we have identified Tequila as a novel candidate gene involved in the regulation of longevity in Drosophila melanogaster.
We have found that a hypomorphic mutation of Tequila (Teq f01792), as well as cell-specific downregulation of Tequila in insulin-producing neurons of the fly, significantly extends life span. Tequila deficiencyâinduced life-span extension is likely to be associated with reduced insulin-like signaling, because Tequila mutant flies display several common phenotypes of insulin dysregulation, including reduced circulating Drosophila insulin-like peptide 2 (Dilp2), reduced Akt phosphorylation, reduced body size, and altered glucose homeostasis. These observations suggest that Tequila may confer life-span extension by acting as a modulator of Drosophila insulin-like signaling.

Ever since Mardi Gras ‘93, I have had a self-induced Tequila deficiency.
LoL
Really? I did that in high school, didn’t know adults did it that way too....
drosphila means “garbage lover”
LOL Yep, that too.
RE “...Who the hell is Drosophila Melanogaster ...”
I remember her well. Blonde, Nordic-type... horned helmet, shield, spear... was into ALL sorts of kinky stuff. They all said she was fat, but I just thought “big-boned”...
She lived over on 7th street in Hoboken... and you KNOW how those Jersey girls are...
Had her own song too... “Whole Lotta Drosie”, from AC/DC...
If not, they weren't doing it right.
Oh, great. Now my fruit flies will be drinking up all my tequila.
Mockingbird and sunrise pings. Thanks Rebelbase.
The common fruit fly. You just watch to see if the longest living ones stagger when they fly.
Hey! “Melanogaster” is my middle name!
Comments?
You can give the fruit flies all of that junk, AFAIC.
Maybe I’ll have to develop a liking for that. Maybe.
;o]
Later research will turn up the fact that it's actually the *worm* that does the trick.
Welp. That tears it. Never mind tequila, then...
“Comments?”
Stop wasting perfectly good Tequila?!!
The dysregulation of insulin they are talking about appears to have some side effects in the fruit fly. Attempts to trigger similar types of insulin dysregulation in humans would in all probability also trigger a wide array of side effects and unintended consequences. Human insulin serves a very important purpose that was more relevant in the eras preceding civilization and agriculture. Humans have not yet had sufficient time to adapt to the very recent explosive increases in carbohydrate consumption that in turn unprecedented high levels of insulin in the bloodstream. The consumption of Tequila spirits presumably will still result in having increased blood glucose levels as the alcohol is metabolized and damages kidney and brain functions. How much the tequila component separate from the alcohol would offset such damage is unlikely to provide any significant offset and benefit. Naturally, there are probably no end of self experimenters who will try to falsify that conjecture (grin). From the scientific point of view this news is an interesting view into the functioning of insulin in the presence of a different factor. How useful it can be towards treating abnormal blood glucose and insulin levels remains to be seen, likely in many years from now.
Exactly what I was thinking. What is the active ingredient(s)? There are people that east prickly pear and insist it is good for several conditions
