Is Recession Preparing a New Breed of Survivalist? [Survival Today - an On going Thread #2]
May 05th,2008

Posted on 02/09/2009 12:36:11 AM PST by nw_arizona_granny

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training

I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

>>>for when and if my garden dries out and starts producing<<<

Hope yours does... One of the advantages of living on a giant sandbar is that water drains pretty well. After all that rain, would you believe I actually was watering yesterday and today... First corn is starting to tassel and string beans, squash, tomatoes, water melons and cantaloupe are blossoming like mad, so wanted to give them a boost. (picked first green beans, zucchini and peppers today for dinner)

Oh, the disadvantage of living on a huge sandbar is that it dries out quickly too.

LOL Eagle50AE pushed the anger button there... (Maybe I was just all loaded, primed and cocked - just looking for an opportunity to explosively unload)

Aren't we all these days? All the crap going on is enough to make a sane conservative go off the deep end.

All clay here. In fact, this 15 acres was a brick yard many, many years ago. Huge hollows in the surroundings indicate where clay was extracted for bricks. When we ditched an area for drainage a few years ago, an art teacher was thrilled to get the blue clay to use for sculpting. The constant use of compost has made some of the land fairly friable, but it’s a struggle.

In one of these hollows, hubby would love to fashion a root cellar, but I think that’s too large a task to attempt with all the other projects we have going.

Years ago, when we had pigs, we must have built their pen over the brick yard, as they rooted out scads of old bricks which I salvaged for walkways.

Let me know what you do about cutting up the meat cause I’d like to know for when I try.

Well, lacking any input (everyone must be busy with their own preparations!), I did some of each. Some stew-sized pieces and larger slices about the size of the jar opening. Did 14 jars today! I haven't tried any yet, but the aroma from the beef broth is marvelous.

We're having pasta tonight. On meat canning days, I don't feel like having meat at all for some reason. Overload, perhaps? When we try the meat in the jars, I'll let you know how the different sized pieces came out!

E. COLI O157 - USA (04): REFRIGERATED COOKIE DOUGH
**************************************************
A ProMED-mail post
http://www.promedmail.org
ProMED-mail is a program of the
International Society for Infectious Diseases
http://www.isid.org

Date: Mon 29 Jun 2009
Source: US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) press announcement [edited]
http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm169733.htm

Today, the US Food and Drug Administration announced that it has found
_Escherichia coli_ O157:H7 (a bacterium that can cause serious foodborne
illness) in a sample of prepackaged Nestle Toll House refrigerated cookie
dough currently under recall by the manufacturer and marketer, Nestle USA.
The contaminated sample was collected at Nestle’s facility in Danville,
Virginia on 25 Jun 2009.

On 19 Jun 2009 the FDA and the US Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) warned consumers not to eat any varieties of prepackaged
Nestle Toll House refrigerated cookie dough due to the risk of
contamination with _E. coli_ O157:H7. The warning was based on an
epidemiological study conducted by CDC and several state and local health
departments. As of [Thu 25 Jun 2009] CDC reports that 69 persons from 29
states have been infected with the outbreak strain. 34 persons have been
hospitalized, 9 with a severe complication called hemolytic uremic
syndrome. No one has died.

Further laboratory testing is needed to conclusively link the _E. coli_
strain found in the product to the same strain that is causing the outbreak.

Nestle USA has fully cooperated with the FDA and CDC investigation and has
recalled all of its prepackaged Nestle Toll House refrigerated cookie dough
products.

For answers to consumer questions about this recall and warning, go to
http://www.fda.gov/Food/ResourcesForYou/Consumers/ucm168346.htm
For more information about _E. coli_, visit the CDC website at

LOL - actually that served to lower it!

Pressure builds up and gotta be released somehow -

You are absolutely right - it don’t look good at all.

If I would only see someone - anyone - who is half way sane with some little bit of leadership, there would be a glimmer of hope.

So, guess I will just continue to PREPARE for whatever they might throw our way.

I sometimes think more of us need to be more like my Grandmother’s Sister.... She taught elementary school for 53 years - When she was 96 I remember her calling Maryland Governors office and using her teachers moxie, got past all the outer office screeners and when she got the Governor on the phone, she dressed him down till a fly would avoid him. She told him in no uncertain terms that she expected him to straighten up and better fly right... She told him “Marvin, I knew your mother, and she would tan your hide good and proper for what you are doing. Since she isn’t around anymore, I know she would want me to step in for her. Now you call those people up and straighten out this mess you’ve made.” He did.....

Aaah life was simpler then...

For what it is worth, her father was the one who introduced and got womens sufferage passed when he was a State Senator in Maryland.
