Is Recession Preparing a New Breed of Survivalist? [Survival Today - an On going Thread #2]
May 05th,2008

Posted on 02/09/2009 12:36:11 AM PST by nw_arizona_granny

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training

I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

Influenza A(H1N1) - update 35

21 May 2009 — As of 06:00 GMT, 21 May 2009, 41 countries have officially reported 11 034 cases of influenza A(H1N1) infection, including 85 deaths.

The breakdown of the number of laboratory-confirmed cases by country is given in the following table and map.
Map of the spread of Influenza A(H1N1): number of laboratory confirmed cases and deaths [jpg 616kb]

As of 06:00 GMT, 21 May 2009
Laboratory-confirmed cases of new influenza A(H1N1) as officially reported to WHO by States Parties to the International Health Regulations (2005)

[Odd, over half the world’s cases are in the U.S....

Why, when we are said to have the best health and care??

Last night for a short time I listened to the Las Vegas Police Scanner, the Emergency Medical crews were picking up folks with “stomach pains”, and when they advised the hospital that they would be arriving in 5 minutes, were told “You are aware that I do not have a bed for you? “ “Come on in, when I can, I will find a bed for your patient!!!”

I heard a couple refused and sent to other medical clinics.

I have heard other nights when they Medical teams were hauling lots of patients, but have never heard that the beds were full or to divert to other hospitals, unless it was for a special need that they did not have anyone on duty to fill.

Looks like the pandemic has not hit us as yet...

Can a City Girl Live Off Wild Food For a Week in Portland?

From May 24 through May 30, local “Wild Girl” Becky Lerner will be eating an entirely
wild diet as she forages from sidewalks, parks, wilderness areas and yards in Portland.

There will be no dumpster diving or mooching off gardens - Lerner will be surviving
on wild edibles only.

Dragonfly Skyscraper Farm - an urban agriculture proposal for New York City

Architecture has to serve a new agriculture and to design for the new social desire
for ecologic mutation and food autonomy! The Dragonfly project suggests building
a prototype of an urban farm offering a mixed programme of housing, offices and
laboratories using ecological engineering, and farming spaces, which are vertically
laid out in several floors and partly cultivated by its own inhabitants. This vertical
farm utilizes sustainable applications of organic agriculture based on the intensive
production varied according to the rhythm of the seasons.

This nourishing agriculture
is in favour of the reuse of biodegradable waste and the keeping energy and renewable
resources for planning of an ecosystemic densification.

1889 - My Handkerchief Garden - A City Farmer in the 1800’s

At last it was found ; a six-room house with a mere handkerchief of a garden, measuring
about one-thirtieth of an acre, or about as big as a city back yard. The soil was
a wet, heavy clay, full of stones, and shaded by a number of tall trees growing
on the next lot.

In March, 1887, we moved to the place, and on the twenty-first
we paid twenty-five cents for one ounce of Tennis Ball Lettuce seed. So it was the
scrap of a garden began, and thereon does hang the more or less learned remarks
that make this book.

Nutro Products Announces Voluntary Recall of Limited Range of Dry Cat Food Products

Contact:
Monica Barrett
Nutro Products, Inc.
(615) 628-5387
monica.barrett@effem.com

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — Franklin, Tennessee (May 21, 2009) — Today, Nutro Products announced a voluntary recall of select varieties of NUTRO® NATURAL CHOICE® COMPLETE CARE® Dry Cat Foods and NUTRO® MAX® Cat Dry Foods with “Best If Used By Dates” between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010. The cat food is being voluntarily recalled in the United States and ten additional countries. This recall is due to incorrect levels of zinc and potassium in our finished product resulting from a production error by a US-based premix supplier.

Two mineral premixes were affected. One premix contained excessive levels of zinc and under-supplemented potassium. The second premix under-supplemented potassium. Both zinc and potassium are essential nutrients for cats and are added as nutritional supplements to NUTRO® dry cat food.

This issue was identified during an audit of our documentation from the supplier. An extensive review confirmed that only these two premixes were affected. This recall does not affect any NUTRO® dog food products, wet dog or cat food, or dog and cat treats.

Affected product was distributed to retail customers in all 50 states, as well as to customers in Canada, Mexico, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, New Zealand, and Israel. We are working with all of our distributors and retail customers, in both the US and internationally, to ensure that the recalled products are not on store shelves. These products should not be sold or distributed further.

Consumers who have purchased affected product should immediately discontinue feeding the product to their cats, and switch to another product with a balanced nutritional profile. While we have received no consumer complaints related to this issue, cat owners should monitor their cat for symptoms, including a reduction in appetite or refusal of food, weight loss, vomiting or diarrhea. If your cat is experiencing health issues or is pregnant, please contact your veterinarian.

Consumers who have purchased product affected by this voluntary recall should return it to their retailer for a full refund or exchange for another NUTRO® dry cat food product. Cat owners who have questions about the recall should call 1-800-833-5330 between the hours 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM CST, or visit www.nutroproducts.com.

Recalled Pet Food

The varieties of NUTRO® NATURAL CHOICE® COMPLETE CARE® Dry Cat Foods and NUTRO® MAX® Cat Dry Foods listed below with “Best If Used By Dates” between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010 are affected by this voluntary recall.

mention that I just hate cooking, just love to eat the results.<<<

Sounds like a plan to me.

Years ago, I admitted to my self that I raked out the goat pens, more often than I swept the floors in the house.

House work and cooking should be done by robots, for they can be trained to repeat the same move over and over.......long after I am bored and looking for a new project.

I admitted years ago, that if I do not play in the dirt, I get mentally ill.

LOL, works and is a good excuse for an attached greenhouse.

Yes, if they were foolish enough to set all the dummy bombs, how dangerous would they have been with real ones.

Is this related to the van of a couple years ago, that was found parked on the street for a week, loaded with explosives?

And is it related to the many calls that I hear on the police scanners, for vehicles parked, where they shouldn’t be?

Some of the scanners, if I also listen to the town on the radio, I will hear warnings/requests to the residents about reporting unguarded vehicles.

As Anne (with an e) of Green Gables would say, “we truly are kindred spirits.” I, too, would much rather be raking goat pens than sweeping floors. One good thing, now we make more mess outside than inside as we are out most of the time.

How I would love a greenhouse similar to my 50 foot one I had years ago and if it happened to be hooked to the house, so much the better. Every year, I wonder if I will be gardening another year, so justifying the expense of a greenhouse would be difficult, so I content myself with my grow lights in my loft and consider myself lucky.

Indeed, in Louisiana, which has already reported five deaths so far, Lt. Gov. Al-Qaeda could spread avian flu, report warns
NATIONAL POST ^ | 10-25-05 | Stewart Bell

Posted on Tuesday, November 01, 2005 8:38:53 AM by markedmannerf

TORONTO - A newly disclosed Canadian intelligence study says al-Qaeda might try to spread the deadly avian flu virus as part of its campaign to sow terror in Western nations.

The report by the federal government’s Integrated Threat Assessment Centre describes the avian flu as a “potential terrorist-induced” pandemic and specifically mentions Osama bin Laden.

“It is significant to note that Osama bin Laden views chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapons as legitimate,” says the report, titled “Pandemics: Avian Flu.”

“In addition, Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda representatives have repeatedly named Canada as a target,” it says under the heading “Biology and Terrorism.”

A copy of the study was released to the National Post under the Access to Information Act.

Security officials have long feared that Islamic terrorists bent on disrupting Western economies and killing masses of civilians might resort to biological agents.

Terrorists have shown increasing interest in biological and chemical weapons since the Japanese religious sect Aum Shinri Kyo attacked the Tokyo subway system with sarin in 1995.

Al-Qaeda experimented with such weapons at its camps in Afghanistan, but there have been few attempts so far to use them, partly because they are difficult to manufacture and disseminate.

But the Canadian report says last winter’s outbreak of the H5N1 strain of avian flu in Asia “is of concern due to its high mortality rate in humans” and warns of “worldwide pandemic.”

Aside from terrorists, the report warns of the possibility that smugglers could unwittingly bring the virus to Canada. It cites the example of a Thai man who tried to smuggle two infected birds into Belgium last October.

The crested hawk eagles were concealed in plastic tubes in his carry-on baggage. The veterinarian who handled the birds was hospitalized with symptoms of avian flu but survived.
