Is Recession Preparing a New Breed of Survivalist? [Survival Today - an On going Thread #2]
May 05th,2008

Posted on 02/09/2009 12:36:11 AM PST by nw_arizona_granny

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training

I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

We were on vacation back during Blue Law times. There was nothing open on Sunday. We were starving. We finally found a grocery store open so I ran in to get a couple cans of pork ‘n beans and a can opener. The store refused to allow me to buy the can opener.<<<

Laughing and remembering a week long camping trip, that we made with no can opener or silverware. Bill and his brother decided to “re-load” the gear and left the basket of kitchen stuff sitting in the driveway and away we went.

Used pieces of paper plates for scooping up food and Bill could open cans with a knife.

At the different mining camps, I have found mountains of tin cans, all opened with knives.

There is a little military can opener, not sure where you would find one, no larger than a 50 cent piece that will fit on your key ring and always be there. They were for the WW2 C-Rations, which were all canned.

I had forgotten the Blue law days, but remember the fun of going shopping on Sunday, when they were lifted.

Thanks Granny! It’s gonna take me a month to read everything, but it will be well worth it. Gonna go tomorrow and get some more print cartridges and paper.<<<

You are welcome and it is good that you will print it out on paper, for all the hours that i spend on the computer, I still do not trust them to be here and working, when I need them the worst.

Glad that you found us.

Thank-you. I appreciate the warm welcome. (proof I was right about this thread :) Yes, after 35 years “up North”, we’re heading for the family farm in my beloved hills and the kind of “community” described in the “Alabama” song, “Down Home”. :)

“Several are looking for places and others are able to hunker in place.”

Good luck to those looking and congratulations to those that are already there. :)<<<

Welcome to the thread, it is good to find new folks reading it.

Do join in, as you will have much to share with us, during this move and getting set up.

Good luck and do be happy.

Can you recommend a hand mill? I have seen several but don’t know which one to get.<<<

Several of the thread readers went with the one at Walton’s, I did not buy one, but do shop there for all my dried and bagged food products, they have been wonderful to me over the years.

Solar lights! I went out in the yard and brought a pair of them in, shined them off the light ceiling, and they did excellently! Lasted all night - put them back out the next day and they recharged fully. If TSHTF, these could be very handy and do not require any fuel or batteries. Oh, and I picked up one and used it as a flashlight going out to check on the chickens - works great! So now I will consider that I have 10 solar powered flashlights for general use whenever I need them, and yard effects until I do.<<<

What an excellent idea, for the fancy solar flashlights are expensive, and your price is no more than a cheap flashlight.

In the past, we could use the car battery and a wire to hook up the headlight of an auto.

LOL, was that only from Model A’s? Could have been, don’t know if it will work with newer headlights.

and if you don’t see what you need, ask and Granny will likely be able to find it. We have a number of great posters here - delawhere, Granny, upcountrymiss, jdoutrider, cottonball, and many others (forgive me if I missed you!). It’s a great place to hang out.<<<

I fear you give me too much credit, for there are many here with a far wider knowledge and more up to date knowledge than I have.

That is wonderful, we are all interested in hearing some that you have learned.

Some of us will only do it in our dreams, but all of us need to know what it is all about and what is important to know.

Can you explain about the bitter meat ruining spot [gland] on the liver.

I know goats have several musk glands, but have forgotten where they are.

LOL, no don’t ask me why it came to mind, for I asked me what I had forgotten about dealing with wild food and it went
through my mind.

Do folks still cut the head off poultry and tie the feet to the clothes line to drain the blood from them?

You are on the ping list, which I don’t send out often enough.

>>>LOL, was that only from Model A’s? Could have been, don’t know if it will work with newer headlights.<<<

Yep, it will still work with any of them...

You bring back fond memories - My choices for my first vehicle was between a Model A and a 1947 Jeep. Father clinched the decision when he told me that if I got the Model A, I could not count on him coming to the rescue if I broke down. (I know he would have, but it told me his choice)

Have had a Jeep affair ever since - Today, we even have his and hers Jeeps as our vehicles - Of course the Mrs. has a ‘sissy’ Liberty but I have my TJ...

It was always fun to go to the dump>>

For years, the children and I worked to keep hubby away from the dump. He always came back with more than he took. He was in collaboration with the dump attendant, who would set aside “treasures” for hubby to rehabilitate. However, now, years later, he loves to drag out something useful for us from his dump collecting days. Of course, dump collecting was banned many, many years ago. For years, we never bought a lawn mower. There were always many perfectly good ones at the dump in the spring, discarded by someone who had bought a bigger, better model. Hubby doesn’t have any junk, only really good “stuff” that just needs a little TLC.

And here I thought you were an old rooster!! If I had the choice of a 1947 Jeep as a first vehicle, I would be opting for a brand, new vehicle. You’re just a spring chicken!!

I don’t feel quite so bad now when I read about all you accomplish in a day, when I get exhausted just thinking about it.
