Is Recession Preparing a New Breed of Survivalist? [Survival Today - an On going Thread #2]
May 05th,2008

Posted on 02/09/2009 12:36:11 AM PST by nw_arizona_granny

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training

I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

California:

Watching channel 2 in Los Angeles, they are providing live aerial coverage of the fire. Many homes burning, at least 1 dozen. No fire apparatus visible and only two helicopters seen. One looks like a firehawk and the other a bell 412.

[California, note the traffic jams, praying time....granny]

Fire is now burning all over the place with extremely long range spotting into neighborhoods that are getting established in landscaping and homes and even the windward side of the fire has become very active and is spitting out spot fires downwind on the western margin of the fire area.
Fixed-wing are still grounded due to high winds.

I think the GPS guy bamboozled me. I met him at the door and asked if that was a GPS in his hand. He politely answered yes. Then I asked him to leave. Looking very bewildered, he said,” you don’t want me to GPS your house?” I replied that I didn’t want any of the services that Obama was offering. He then said that he was working for the Dept of Commerce, not Obama and he was wearing a badge stating that he represented the Dept of Commerce. Anyway, he mentioned that he was retired Secret Service. As I have dealt with the Secret Service and have nothing but admiration for them, I asked how his service was during the Clinton admin. He shrugged and said,”harumph”. That did it! I graciously let him do his GPS thingy and go on his way. Was I duped or not?
On another note, DW, after 60 plus years, my seaweeding days are over. Last Sunday, I was told by a town official that taking anything from the beach was illegal and he should make me shovel back what I had already harvested but he wouldn’t this once. Going to be lots of unhappy little ones when they have to dump their cache of shells, snails, sand dollars etc. (s/)

>>>I think the GPS guy bamboozled me. I met him at the door and asked if that was a GPS in his hand.<<<

Nope, they can even do it from the road. They have targeting equipment that they can sight through, aim at your front door (target) and it will give them the exact coordinates. Mostly used by military though.

>>>he was working for the Dept of Commerce, not Obama and he was wearing a badge stating that he represented the Dept of Commerce. <<<

Boy, that was a fib... 0bama - The One - has put the entire census under the Chicago mobster Rahm Emanuel - his chief of staff. He doesn’t trust Dept. of Commerce to do it - they won’t ‘adjust’ the data to suit him.

>>>after 60 plus years, my seaweeding days are over.<<<

You know, Maine has sure lost a whole lot of stature in my book here lately... What did they do, import a bunch of Vermonters or maybe from Massachusetts to run things? I understand same sex marriages are the officially sanctioned marriages there now.

I used to be one of the lead volunteer instructors for the Delaware Nature Education Society - but with the influx of wing-nut know-it-all, politically correct, ignorant ‘ecologists’ today, I wouldn’t even consider associating with them.

Today, kids cannot take a single leaf from a State Park so they can build an identification key, cannot take a seashell or anything - for any reason. I used to take kids out to a natural cranberry bog - even let them eat a couple - you don’t dare do that now.

Seems to be a mentality of exterminate the people to preserve the environment for the elite.

Boy, this could get to be depressing... Maybe the 5 days of dreary rain we have had added to that... Well, guess I should be thinking of how it is helping the hundreds of Poplar cuttings I put out. (they are taking off!) Just wish I could get into the garden without sinking to my ankles.

Salvador Dali, guest at Helena Rubinstein’s Victory Garden party- 1943

Last week the United States Crop Corps, an organization of auxiliary farm workers
being recruited by the War Manpower Commission, received the uncompromising support
of Helena Rubinstein, who gave a cocktail party to honour it and also display her
own penthouse Victory Garden, known to everybody within reach of Madame Rubinstein’s
publicity staff as the Farm in the Sky.

EPA Brochure - Brownfields Redevelopment and Local Agriculture - How Does Your Garden
Grow?

“Communities nationwide use brownfields funding to assess and clean sites for a
variety of uses, including community gardens and farmers markets.

Brownfields are
properties that are vacant or abandoned due to concerns about real or perceived
contamination on the property. Using funds from EPA, states, tribes and other sources,
communities can assess sites and clean brownfields, creating safe spaces where people
can grow their own food, or buy locally-grown food. The cleanup and redevelopment
process helps to ensure safe and healthy garden and market areas.”

1942 - More City Farming in the War Years

A Lady who knows a thing or two about farming called us up with a detailed indictment
of the victory garden at Radio City Promenade: the tomato plants, she said, appeared
to be bearing no fruit, the broccoli had been allowed to go to seed, the squash
plants had large blossoms but no squashes, the cornstalks were tied with string
to supports, in a way she found effete - “and who, God wot, eats Swiss chard? -
she concluded.

of countrywide war-related food shortages.

EQIP Funds Available for Organic Production
http://www.usda.gov/wps/portal?contentidonly=true&contentid=2009/05/0146.xml
USDA today announced a special three-week sign-up for farmers in the process of converting to organic farming to receive technical and financial assistance through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/eqip/) (EQIP). Today’s announcement sets aside $50 million out of the $1 billion EQIP program for a special three-week sign-up for farms converting to organic production, farms expanding their organic production, or existing organic farms who desire conservation support to reach even higher levels of environmental performance. The sign-up period begins Monday, May 11 and goes through Friday, May 29. Six core conservation practices (conservation crop rotation, cover cropping, integrated pest management, nutrient management, rotational grazing, and forage harvest management) are being made available to transitioning organic farmers on a nationwide basis. The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition has prepared a memo (http://sustainableagriculture.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/eqip_organic_initiative_memo09may5.pdf) with more details. NCAT will also offer additional information through our ATTRA hot-line at 1-800-346-9140 (English), 1-800-411-322 (Spanish) and website (http://www.attra.ncat.org).

USDA Releases 100 Day Progress Report
http://www.usda.gov/wps/portal/!ut/p/_s.7_0_A/7_0_1OB?contentidonly=true&contentid=2009/04/0138.xml
On the 100th day of the Obama administration, USDA reflected on the new course it has set to promote a sustainable, safe, sufficient and nutritious food supply, to ensure that America leads the global fight against climate change, and to revitalize rural communities by expanding economic opportunities. USDA released a progress report (http://www.usda.gov/wps/portal/!ut/p/_s.7_0_A/7_0_1OB?navid=USDA_100DAY) on its actions during the first 100 days and also launched a new web tool (http://www.usda.gov/wps/portal/?navid=USDA_ARRA) to allow Americans to learn where and how USDA is spending funds provided in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

New Crop Payment Decision Tool Available
http://www.extension.org/pages/New_Decision_Aid_Offered_by_Agricultural_Food_Policy_Center
The Agricultural and Food Policy Center at Texas A&M University has released new decision aid software (http://www.afpc.tamu.edu/models/acre/index.php) that will help crop producers assess the risk of receiving farm program payments. The tool will help producers decide whether to continue receiving counter-cyclical payments (CCP) triggered during times of low prices, or opt for a revenue-based payment known as Average Crop Revenue Election (ACRE) triggered by low prices and/or yields.

USDA Holding Animal Identification System Hearing Sessions
http://www.usda.gov/wps/portal/!ut/p/_s.7_0_A/7_0_1OB/.cmd/ad/.ar/sa.retrievecontent/.c/6_2_1UH/.ce/7_2_5JM/.p/5_2_4TQ/.d/1/_th/J_2_9D/_s.7_0_A/7_0_1OB?PC_7_2_5JM_contentid=2009/05/0143.xml&PC_7_2_5JM_parentnav=LATEST_RELEASES&PC_7_2_5JM_navid=NE
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) will hold a series of listening sessions on the National Animal Identification System (NAIS). The meetings will take place next month in Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington state. ‘USDA needs to hear directly from our stakeholders as we work together to create an animal disease traceability program we can all support,’ said Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack. ‘I encourage individuals and organizations to voice their concerns, ideas and potential solutions about animal identification, by either attending these listening sessions or submitting comments online.’ If you are unable to attend a listening session, you can also submit feedback online (http://animalid.aphis.usda.gov/nais/feedback).

Food Supplements May Keep Poultry Parasites at Bay
http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/pr/2009/090501.htm
Poultry infected with the parasite Eimeria maxima usually develop avian coccidiosis, a disease estimated to cost producers globally more than $1.2 billion every year. So Agricultural Research Service (ARS) immunologist Hyun Lillehoj has been working with colleagues in ARS and around the world to find dietary supplements that strengthen the poultry immune system. The researchers found that chickens that consumed ground green tea for two weeks prior to parasitic infection produced significantly fewer fecal E. maxima oocysts than the control group.

New SPIN Resources Available
http://www.pennsylvaniaagconnection.com/story-state.php?Id=335&yr=2009
A new guide that details three initiatives farmers can use to grow their businesses has been added to the SPIN-Farming online (http://www.spinfarming.com/) learning series on sub-acre farming. ‘The Small Plot INtensive (SPIN) 4 Season Marketing guide helps farmers get beyond the typical three season thinking to achieve higher levels of income,’ says co-author Wally Satzewich. Expansion initiatives detailed in the guide include selling throughout the winter at an indoor market, micro greens and shoot production and developing a craft product line.

Funding Opportunities

EQIP Organic Initiative
http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/eqip/
USDA has announced $50 Million for a new initiative to meet the Obama Administration’s promise to encourage more organic agriculture production. Funding for the initiative is being made available as part of the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). Organic producers may also apply for assistance under general EQIP. Under the Organic Initiative required minimum core conservation practices will be determined by specific resource concerns. The practices are: Conservation Crop Rotation; Cover Crop; Nutrient Management; Pest Management; Prescribed Grazing; and Forage Harvest Management. States must consider using any appropriate practice that meets the resource concern on a particular operation. Applications received from organic producers or producers in transition to organic farming will be accepted under this initiative between May 11 and May 29. The 2009 Organic Initiative will be administered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Interested producers should visit their nearest USDA Service Center to determine eligibility.
Proposals are due May 29, 2009.

Conservation Effects Assessment Program

CSREES requests applications for the Integrated Research, Education, and Extension Competitive Grants Program—Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP) for fiscal year (FY) 2009 to develop research and extension projects aimed at improving the watershed health of grazing land watersheds across the Nation. CEAP seeks to fund projects that evaluate the effects of grazing land conservation practices, especially with respect to understanding how the suite of conservation practices, the timing of these activities, and the spatial distribution of these practices throughout a watershed influence their effectiveness for achieving locally defined watershed health goals.
Proposals are due July 1, 2009.

Illinois Conservation Innovation Grant
http://www.il.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/cig/
Illinois’ USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will offer a new state component under the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP)called the Conservation Innovation Grant (CIG) program. The CIG program is designed as a competitive grant option to stimulate creation and adoption of new conservation approaches and technologies that protect and enhance natural resources. As a sub-set of EQIP, CIG strives to speed the transfer and use of the type of technologies and methods that show promise in solving Illinois’ top natural resource problems.
Proposals are due May 15, 2009.

Clean Ohio Agricultural Easement Purchase Program
http://www.agri.ohio.gov/divs/farmland/farm_aepp.aspx
The Clean Ohio Agricultural Easement Purchase Program (AEPP) provides funding to assist landowners and communities in preserving Ohio’s farmland, our most vital resource. The funds will be used to purchase agricultural easements from Ohio farmland owners. Farmland protection activities not only ensure that the scenic views and heritage of Ohio’s countryside are maintained for future generations, but they also benefit our environment and provide critical habitat for local wildlife populations. The Clean Ohio program also helps family farms transition to the next generation and protects the economic foundation of Ohio’s largest industry.
Proposals are due May 11, 2009.

Yes, I really mourn for my state. Growing up, my avidly Democratic family (they still are-I’m the only one who has seen the writing on the wall) were lone agitators in this mainly GOP state. Now, they fit in nicely, while I am the agitator in the crowd. There are some avid right-wingers in the northern parts, but the immigrants and the “give it to me free and now” crowd in the southern more populated parts of the state have ruined this beautiful place.

Some days, I just feel too tired to fight city hall any more. That seaweed is rotting fast and the town workers will be bulldozing it out where it will just come in and out with the tide, wrapping itself around the tourist's ankles until a storm takes it farther out to sea. All of my recent plantings of berries, fruit trees and ornamental shrubs are loving this weather but they all will be crying for some sun if we don't clear off soon (me included.)

Sounds like almost all of the U.S., not just your beautiful state. It is very sad.

That did it! I graciously let him do his GPS thingy and go on his way. Was I duped or not?<<<

It is the ‘party’ orders and they must be followed.

Or is it pay back for refusing to be chipped?

Next we will read that the rotting sea weeds are killing off the fish.

I am not surprised, for the wilderness study areas in the west are in the same class.

Bunch of idiots class.

In my opinion.

[California]

Five additional firefighters were injured besides the five reported yesterday, but none are seriously injured.

[Eight or more Firefighters now injured...granny]

Today is hotter and dryer here upwind in SLO County so this could be a bad day on the fireline.

Burned structure totals are being tallied as I type this but are officially unknown at present but appear to be in the dozens of homes range.

The two best media sources for information on this fire are the following:

http://www.independent.com/

http://www.keyt.com/

Kim Patrick Noyes
Atascadero, CA

Latest reports are still at 1300 acres, 0% contained and 30 structures destroyed.
(This is per the latest ICS209)

You should see the expressions on the tourists’ faces when that rotten seaweed winds around their ankles when wading in the surf.

>>>That seaweed is rotting fast and the town workers will be bulldozing it out where it will just come in and out with the tide, wrapping itself around the tourist’s ankles until a storm takes it farther out to sea.<<<

OH NO!!! Those short-sighted loons... That is the WORST thing they can do with it... Don’t they know that the detritus they are pushing back out to sea will anaerobically decompose and deplete the Oxygen levels and cause ‘dead-zones’!

In their ignorance, they are unbalancing the ecosystem. It is natural for it to be washed up into the littoral zone, aerobically decompose, harbor a multitude of organisms and insects that serve as food for the sea birds - piping plovers, terns, and over 400 other species that inhabit or migrate to the area.

By selectively harvesting a portion of the seaweed, you are helping balance the natural order. Sequestering a portion of the carbon in your garden and relieving the overload to the ecosystem caused by the nutrients they are pumping into the sea and maintaining the habitat for wildlife at an optimal level.

They need to fund a multi-million dollar environmental impact study - then they will have to pay reparations to 0bama (and maybe Al Gore too) for the damage they have been causing.

On the other hand, we could write a grant proposal that would evaluate the benefits of selective harvesting to augment sequestration of carbon, reduce global warming and maintain a balance of nutrient distribution. A 10 year study should keep you in compost for a while... LOL

Testosterone gel products (AndroGel 1% and Testim 1%)

Audience: Urological and Endocrinological healthcare professionals, pediatricians
FDA notified healthcare professionals that it will require two prescription topical testosterone gel products, AndroGel 1% and Testim 1%, to include a boxed warning on the products’ labels after receiving reports of adverse effects in children who were inadvertently exposed to testosterone through contact with another person being treated with these products. Despite the currently labeled precautions, FDA has received reports of eight cases of secondary exposure to testosterone in children ranging in age from nine months to five years. Since that time, additional reports of secondary exposure have been received by the agency and are presently under review. Of the fully reviewed cases, adverse events reported in these children included inappropriate enlargement of the genitalia (penis or clitoris), premature development of pubic hair, advanced bone age, increased libido and aggressive behavior. The gels are approved for use in men who either no longer produce testosterone or produce it in very low amounts. Both products are applied once daily, to the shoulders or upper arms. FDA has provided recommendations and precautions to minimize the potential for secondary exposure.

Read the complete MedWatch 2009 Safety summary, including a link to the FDA news release, at:

http://www.fda.gov/medwatch/safety/2009/safety09.htm#testosterone

You are encouraged to report all serious adverse events and product quality problems to FDA MedWatch at www.fda.gov/medwatch/report.htm
